The goose beaked whales
\nOr Cuvier
\nAn abundant whale wI hear
\nPresent in many oceans and seas
\nAnd what does seem clear
\nIts anatomical makeup
\nIts neonate head provides
\nA massive sound recording organ
\nAnd we are making strides
\nI suppose and understanding
\nThe great whales do possess
\nOutstanding sensitivity
\nAnd are subject to our stress<\/p>\n
They dive deep and are able
\nTo cope on a take of air
\nTo great depths they can manage
\nClearly they are aware
\nOf their own credentials
\nBut what we tend to do
\nIs not be quite as mindful
\nAs the whales
\nSadly its true<\/p>\n
Creation gave them special powers
\nOf hearing and of sight
\nOf sonar and of memory
\nAnd as students they are bright
\nThey learn but they are up against
\nMan whose seldom kind
\nTo those who swim beneath his ships
\nWho possess their amazing mind<\/p>\n
Our noise and we make lots of it
\nOur navies sonic booms
\nThe oil corporations
\nThey manufacture tombs
\nFor many of the sensitives
\nWho cannot withstand the force
\nOf booming and explosive sounds
\nAt best driven off course<\/p>\n
At worst killed outright
\nSadly
\nIts our lack of care
\nWe feel we are emotional
\nBut trying to compare
\nWith the great whales sensitivity
\nIts a race we cannot win
\nThey have the sensitive machinery
\nWhich does underpin<\/p>\n
Their very existence
\nLoud noises they can be
\nTerrible and we are responsible
\nAnd the undersea
\nSuffers from our arrogance
\nAnd our ignorance as well
\nAnd the noisy seas
\nBring suffering
\nWe really make it hell<\/p>\n
For the sensitives below the waves
\nLong suffering they be
\nUncomplaining tolerant
\nThey really are not free
\nNoisy seas are a killing ground
\nAnd these beaked whales washed clear
\nOn the Irish beaches
\nCould be victims
\nI do fear<\/p>\n
Our plastic waste our chemicals
\nOur run offs and the gear
\nThe fishing nets the floats the leads
\nIts very very clear
\nThe mercury the PCB’s
\nThe glyphosate all there
\nAnd coupled with the noise levels
\nIts a new world of despair<\/p>\n
We have to see the oceans
\nAs a saviour for us all
\nAll this commercial fishing
\nLong lines may enthral
\nThe corporation bank accounts
\nBut small whales everywhere
\nSharks and dolphins and sea birds even
\nAre caught up in the snare<\/p>\n
The seine nets and discarded lines
\nIts a jungle of refuse
\nWe stand guity of the charge
\nOf ignorant abuse
\nSo many whales are beaching
\nA kind of suicide
\nCanaries in the giant cage
\nWhilst we well its denied<\/p>\n
But we better really
\nGet our brains in gear
\nAnd start to see
\nHow we all can make a difference
\nHow we all can be
\nMindful of the other tribes
\nThat share water and share air
\nThey may not look like you and me
