The red ochre grasps you
\nthe sunlight attracts
\nsalt perspiration
\nthe body reacts
\nthe trees and the baskets
\nof ferns and cacti
\nand the raggy green fronds
\nthat dance in the sky<\/p>\n
chendol is sold from one
\nlittle stall
\nice noodles green
\nsugar and all
\npulped durian scooped
\nfrom a plastic tub
\nserved rather hurridly
\nunlike a pub<\/p>\n
I joined some polish guys
\nchewing the fat
\nshowed them a crocodile
\nand where they sat
\nthey asked me to join them
\nI did of course they
\ntalked of chopin almost
\nright away<\/p>\n
the river rolls by
\ngreen almost and
\ncarries the odd plastic bag
\nits all planned
\nPedicabs decked with blossoms
\nroll by
\nwith their rather loud music
\nand I wonder why<\/p>\n
the cobbles don’t work here
\nthe traffic congests
\npollution is high
\nthe old lungs it tests
\nthere’s not much to see
\nlots of rather cheap stalls
\nselling tat fancy that
\nits a shame and it galls<\/p>\n
me really clearly
\nthere’s nice things around
\ngood souvenirs but in tat we are drowned
\nI pads and I phones
\nand many perspire
\nits not what I’d call
\na place of true fire
\nthe buildings are there
\nbut the encumbent tat
\nspoils it all really
\nyea I smell a rat!
\nA heritage city could better
\nitself
\nwith much higher class stalls
