\nA scholar of the wild
\nClearly her enlightenment
\nBegun as a child
\nHer grasp and her awareness
\nA perception of the great
\nAcquaintanceship with the red apes
\nAnd there can be no debate<\/p>\n
This women is remarkable
\nCamp Leakey is the place
\nIn Indonesian Borneo
\nWhich she has made her base
\nAnd has amassed a knowledge
\nIn reality
\nShe is closer to orangutans
\nThan anyone could be<\/p>\n
Its the love and care
\nAnd thought and struggle
\nShe was prepared to make
\nIn what was a most inhospitable place
\nShe had thrust her stake
\nFirmly on the forest floor
\nAnd she was going to stay
\nAnd really do the business
\nProfoundly day by day<\/p>\n
She set up her foundation
\nIt was the OFI
\nAnd dedicated people came
\nFor really to apply
\nOne’s life to such a venture
\nIn the wake of all we know
\nThe great Palm oil explosion
\nAnd how quietly she did grow<\/p>\n
In stature as her authentic
\nBeing was hallmarked to attain
\nShe launched berself into the fight
\nWhich has always been to gain
\nHelp and care for the great red apes
\nFor above all else they were
\nWho she set out to understand
\nWhich some of us concur<\/p>\n
A remarkable farsightedness
\nWith ample amounts of sagacity
\nA shrewdness and a power of thought
\nAnd a great capacity
\nTo struggle through adversity
\nAnd to prove to herself she
\nCould by observation
\nAnd true constancy<\/p>\n
Almost become an Orangutan
\nA forest person who
\nLooked and acted and was dedicated
\nTo do what she must do
\nRealise the quandry
\nThe great Red Apes were in
\nAnd, do something sbout that
\nHelp them help them win<\/p>\n
In a world of utter madness
\nDisrespectful to the core
\nWho would rather log out nature
\nAnd slash and burn for sure
\nWith not a sage among them
\nHow quick they could destroy
\nBut create they were unconscious
\nBut Dr Birute had joy<\/p>\n
In her heart and she had the foresight
\nShe was mindful and she knew
\nLucidly she gambled that souls minds
\nCould win through
\nThere were many disappointments
\nHopelessness and pain
\nBut she forsaw the prophesy
\nDespite all of the rain<\/p>\n
She had the inventiveness
\nThe ingenuity
\nThe insight the resourcefulness
\nAnd all that imagery
\nShe was at Camp Leakey
\nHer angels were around
\nThe rhapsody of being
\nThe place that she had found<\/p>\n
Unreal sometimes
\nChimerical
\nFanciful some say
\nBut when a heart can empathize
\nCan idealize a way
\nAnd can conjur up a meaning
\nA devotion to a cause
\nWho is eloquent and forthright
\nThen the pitch must never pause<\/p>\n
She became a revelation
\nAn angel in the wild
\nA loner its a lonely place
\nAnd anything but mild
\nVast extremes to conquer
\nBut well within her soul
\nAffirming every negative
\nAnd remaining in control<\/p>\n
Being an apprentice a scholar
\nAnd a child
\nWithin the space before her
\nSo ungraciously wild
\nShe stepped into the breach
\nAnd she made it through her war
\nWith veracity and ardour
\nFor what she came here for<\/p>\n
And she is still there
