\nBaikal
\nrift zone where
\nThe earth crust is pulling apart the scare
\nWith mountains all around it
\nIts vastness blows the mind
\nThousands of plants and animals
\nJust everywhere you find<\/p>\n
An absolute superabundance
\nFar flung far reaching size
\nTrying to skirt around it all
\nIt comes as no surprise
\nIn Winter how it freezes
\nIn some places 6 feet thick
\nAnd if one needs to drive
\nThen this is how you pick<\/p>\n
The route across the thickest parts
\nCan surprisingly
\nMake anybody frightened
\nA one ton truck can be
\nMotoring one minute
\nAnd the next submerging fast
\nSupplying reindeer traders
\nWith supplies If thats the job
\nCan be seriously dangerous
\nAnd rapidly can rob<\/p>\n
Ones sanity for disharmony
\nNeeds a six wheel drive
\nWith a foretaste for the impossible
\nAnd a will, to survive
\nUnveiling miles of chaos
\nTrail blazing on and on
\nTwo men against the elements
\nWith their effort and endeavour
\nClearly almost gone<\/p>\n
SIberia’s high plateau’s
\nThe deadly thaw can be
\nWhat appeared impenetrable
\nBeginning to see
\nThe violence of each moment
\nThe convulsion and the force
\nTHe rumpus and the ruckus
\nComing from the source<\/p>\n
The truck under the influence
\nWhere power is potency
\nThe wheels are tearing through the ice
\nAnd snow hypnotically
\nThe immensity of the terrain
\nAs wide ranging as can be
\nWith every mile of vigour
\nPerhaps our sanctuary<\/p>\n
We are off the lake competely
\nAnd on the deepening snow
\nTree lined avenues greet us
\nAs onwards we go
\nIts a godforsaken distance
\nIn the vile conditions here
\nThe steepness and the dipping
\nAnd the rumblings are clear<\/p>\n
Bordering the would be track
\nPines we need to try
\nAnd push down for the leverage
\nTo gain friction which is why
\nOtherwise being bogged down
\nIn the watery melting snow
\nCan really slow ones motion
\nFrom a great build up and flow<\/p>\n
It clearly is exhausting
\nForwards and reversing
\nDigging out and fighting hard
\nAnd ofcourse bloody cursing
\nPraying saying trying
\nTo make headway all the time
\nDuring descents and over rocks
\nAnd the inevitable climb<\/p>\n
It is an inhospitable place
\nDanger at every turn
\nGrizzly bears the moose the wolves
\nSo much to concern
\nWe are safer in the truck me thinks
\nThat walking on the trail
\nBut being bogged down in this slush
\nAnd snow its on a scale<\/p>\n
That gets into your psyche
\nThe truck has vital food
\nShould one of us go up ahead
\nAnd get help however crude
\nTheres a stillness and tranquility
\nBut dangers everywhere
\nBecalmed and anchored in this slush
\nLeads to much despair<\/p>\n
And so one makes the argument
\nTo walk the path ahead
\nPossibly fall asleep out there
\nPossibly wind up dead
\nFind which way the wind blows
\nDirect oneself towards
\nPerhaps hiring some traction
\nWith its due rewards<\/p>\n
The howling of the bungry packs
\nNot music to my ear
\nWith The odd growl and the myriad of eyes
\nI felt such fear
\nLevels rising rapidly
\nSlow going in the snow
\nBut getting to the camp at last
\nWas able to fix a tow<\/p>\n
And leaving in the morning
\nTo get back to the truck
\nSomehow the driver had released its hold
\nAnd so now did tuck
\nThose wheels into the melting snow
\nOn through the watery mass
\nAnd we met up fairly close to camp
\nWith very little gas<\/p>\n
Unloaded the provisions
\nFlour sugar and wheat
\nSomeone managed to hunt a bear
\nSo some had meat to eat
\nThe truck needed attention
\nThe brakes and clutch and we
\nSet to work to repair them
\nAnd then rested actually<\/p>\n
Its only 70 kilometres
\nBut the terrible terrain
\nIts dangerous many trucks are lost
\nAnd fatalities are plain
\nTo see the lake is the deepest lake
\nSome 5000 feet
\nThe largest lake in all the world
\nWhich becomes a huge ice sheet<\/p>\n
Timing thats what its all about
\nAnd lots of courage too
\nHaving the balls to take it on
\nThere is always some who do
\nTake on the low temperatures
\nThe permafrost that bites
\nThe great unlighted wilderness
\nThe wild eyes in our sights<\/p>\n
The deep thought and concentration
\nThe analytic trail
\nThe contemplative expectation
\nReally it doesnt fail
\nTo absolutely wonder
\nAbout the wide eyed watchful souls
\nThe Animals out there that clearly
