The southern indian ocean
\nThe Crozet Islands where
\nElephant Seals and Orca’s
\nAnd King Penguins seem to share
\nThe wild unspoilt horizons
\nCreation at its best
\nAn absolute preamble
\nFor the spirit it does test<\/p>\n
The Patagonian Tooth fish
\nOr the Chilean Sea Bass
\nSupposedly delicious
\nBut the fisherman are crass
\nLong lines hooked a sunder
\nTerror everywhere
\nOrca’s come to help themselves
\nThe baited lines to share<\/p>\n
These boats can lose a fortune
\nFor the Orca’s with their guile
\nWait until the lines are pulled in
\nAnd pilfer them with style
\nThe corruption so apparent
\nFor the fisherman adopt
\nDynamite against the Orca pods
\nAnd so have stopped<\/p>\n
The practice and reduced the numbers
\nA very wicked game
\nBut around the Crozet Islands
\nIt isnt quite the same
\nThis rocky island paradise
\nSees Elephant Seals and they
\nAll congregate there
\nthey have their pups
\nIt is there too that they play<\/p>\n
Also the King Penguins
\nHundreds of them there
\nAnd Orca’s come to hunt the seals
\nAnd penguins to despair
\nThis is the way of Nature
\nIts a wild and stormy place
\nThe sea can be tumultuous
\nAnd its there that the Orca’s chase<\/p>\n
The elephant seals and the penguins
\nTheir game of tag and fight
\nIntrigue and opportunity
\nAnd patience in plain sight
\nThe economy of spirit
\nWhen the weather can be hard
\nWhen the breakers become mountainous
\nAnd you dare not be off guard<\/p>\n
There is logic and theres order
\nIn a most concerting way
\nBut fierce storms can bring chaos
\nAnd destruction to the day
\nLiving through the seasons
\nThrough the roughness of the sea
\nThe crashing smashing violence
\nTo the turbulence that be<\/p>\n
Crashing waves at boiling point
\nA Creaming foaming mass
\nBlundering into the rocks
\nTantrums felt alas
\nIf you happen to be wanting
\nTo feed your babies you
\nMust brave the angry smouldering
\nWaves that are hoping to<\/p>\n
Stop you in your very tracks
\nAnd lift you to the sky
\nOr crush your body between the rocks
\nWho will dare defy
\nNeptune’s fiesty vitriol
\nIn a boiling rage
\nRoaring and rampaging
\nClearly hard to gauge<\/p>\n
The penguins try to do this
\nThey have to afterall
\nFeeding their young babies
\nThey must take on the squall
\nThe Orca’s also waiting
\nThe dangers clearly there
\nSo A dozen or so together
\nOn a wing and on a prayer<\/p>\n
A maelstrom in the making
\nA backwash to the swell
\nDriving rain and icy breath
\nIt really feels like Hell
\nKnocked this way and thrown that way
\nFinally they make
\nThe open see and thrilled to be
\nThe fish all for the sake<\/p>\n
Of their offspring waiting on the beach
\nBrown fur waddling souls
\nRocking now from side to side
\nA little bit like trolls
\nScreeching for their mothers
\nWho are making their way back
\nThrough the turmoil and the waves
\nAnd the orca’s and the flack<\/p>\n
It must be really frightening
\nThe carnage that can be
\nIn the valley and the shadow of death
\nSuch mortality
\nBut clearly some get through it all
\nAnd, do feed their chicks
\nAmazing constitutions
\nDespite the many kicks<\/p>\n
Meanwhile great hunks of blubber
\nWith a sort of elephants nose
\nTitans ready to do battle
\nIt will come to blows
\nBuilding a harem has to be
\nConfrontational certainly
\nWhich many females understand
\nAnd the biggest male in all the land
\nFrom His congregation he will make
\nHis presence felt no give all take<\/p>\n
And all the while the Orca’s they
\nAre waiting there out in the spray
\nThe seals will leave and mothers who
\nBecome their prey will it is true
\nLeave their babies on the sand
\nAlone and they will die the band
\nOf Orphans no where else to go
\nIf they make the sea and reach the flow
\nThe orca’s will be waiting still
\nAnd in the breakers blood will spill<\/p>\n
The natural world is cruel and kind
\nThe roaring forties they unwind
\nA bitterly cold Vents its way
\na vengeance on the sand today
\nSeals are paralysed they know
\nThey feel alone with no where to go
\nHead down waiting now for death
