Courage and commitment to a cause
\nDeep in her heart
\nClearly it a karmic debt
\nThat she had to impart
\nAt 18 under a pen name
\nShe became Nellie Bly
\nWorked on the New York World Newspaper
\nAnd she could reply<\/p>\n
With all her tenacity and cohesion
\nA lady who could be
\nTougher than most others
\nWho have walked through history
\nAn utter single mindedness
\nThat saw her take 10 days
\nAt the Blackwell Island
\nmental Hospital for women
\nA dark craze<\/p>\n
An evil tone whose shadows
\nFell across her soul
\nShe pretended to be mad
\nOut of all control
\nSo as to write up truths
\nThat were all hidden
\nAbout this place
\nThat Was truly torturing women
\nAnd was a disgrace<\/p>\n
It gave her a toehold
\nIn tha patriarchal sphere
\nAllowing her to tell the world
\nWhat so many did fear
\nHer time there was extraordinary
\nIt was torture day and night
\nOn the ugliest food imaginable
\nHer audaciousness was right<\/p>\n
For the time in what was a
\nWilderness of terror to behold
\nWomen were abused
\nFar too much,and wickedness was sold
\nWhat Elizabeth created with her
\nCourage and her will
\nImplanted a spot for women
\nThat rapidly did spill<\/p>\n
Born in 1864 died in 1922
\nA short life but the work she did
\nFor women’s rights was true
\nPut in some foundations
\nGave women a view
\nTill that time things had just seemed awful
\nWhat she had done she drew<\/p>\n
A brighter picture out there
\nFor females of the day
\nEmphasising the positive
\nAnd helping to light their way
\nProving rights were integral
\nAnd had to be maintained
\nShe did so much for all of us
\nAnd through her life, we have gained.<\/p>\n
Elizabeth Cochrane 05\/1864 died 1922 age 57 years
\nWrote under her pen name Nellie Bly<\/p>\n
