Netsilik Eskimo’s
\nThe people of the Seal
\nGo jigging for lake trout
\nA pastime for real
\nIts May 15 fahrenheit
\nHear the crunch of the sled
\nThe cry of the dogs
\nThe snow forms their bed<\/p>\n
Kick out some snow
\nWith the heel of one’s shoe
\nAnd begin to saw slabs out
\nThats what you do
\nBuild ice blocks as walls
\nShave edges in place
\nSome 3 bricks high
\nIts all done at a pace<\/p>\n
Cover with skins
\nA door put in place
\nwhich is where they crawl through
\nThis is their base
\nA perfect igloo
\nThe pelts keep out draught
\nAnd the terrible cold
\nRoll up the spare pelts
\nThe heat they will hold<\/p>\n
Above a pink sky
\nWhere the family can hide
\nAway from the wind
\nIt is quite warm inside
\nFather goes jigging for trout
\nIn the lake
\nWith his knife and his seal rope
\nLake trout he does take<\/p>\n
Wind does move mountains
\nBut deep in the snow
\nWith a fish cooking admirably
\nEach gets a throw
\nOf the dice
\nAnd a taste of the trout
\nAnd clearly the freshness
\nLeaves them in no doubt<\/p>\n
The bite of the frost
\nThe wash of the snow
\nThe tenderest flesh
\nHelps the eskimo’s grow
\nCompared to city folk
\nour industrialized world
\nThey the indigenous
\nWere apparently hurled<\/p>\n
Neither shouting or screaming
\nBack into time
\nWhere the sky turns to grey
\nAnd the grey is the climb
\nTo the clouds to the sky
\nWhere the trout meet their end
\nThe edge of the boot from
