To the outside world,
\nShe comes across as a busy body but she
\nIs actually conscientious
\nA true friend generally
\nThe Water Rail a handsome little bird
\nWho really cares
\nShe struts about and just Shouts out
\nAnswering the prayers<\/p>\n
Of those not quite so energised
\nLike the Grebes or Coots
\nIf a polecat is on the prowl
\nOr the water snake has slithered foul
\nShe highlights those pursuits
\nIn the watery world of reed beds
\nWhen the purple Herons fly
\nBack from far off deserts
\nTo build their nests and try<\/p>\n
With their snake like eyes to watch
\nOver their eggs when they are laid
\nTheir long beaks are really razor sharp
\nAnd all their dues are paid
\nShould a polecat then be after eggs
\nHerons can learn to be
\nlike statues
\nNot a muscle moving
\nimpossible to see<\/p>\n
After their solemn nuptials
\nAnd when the babes are born
\nThey really are the ugliest
\nFrom pre history torn
\nResembling a raptor
\nSpikey hair and bald
\nThey look a bit like dinosaurs
\nThough nobody seems fooled<\/p>\n
The cuckoo, can you hear her
\nHer tell tale cry all know
\nShe will lay in a warblers nest
\nOne big egg and go
\nThe warbler is a tiny soul
\nAnd when the cuckoo hatches
\nThe warbler will be beside herself
\nFor the cuckoo scratches
\nKicks the warblers eggs away
\nOut of the nest she
\nWants the food
\nAnd the warbler brood
\nTragically Had had to pay<\/p>\n
The mother though will
\nRaise the cuckoo
\nThinking it is hers
\nWorking hard just to hunt down food
\nNo patriarchal slurs
\nWill stop her
\nShe is after looking after
\nHer big chick
\nUntil the cuckoo flies away
\nBut she never sees the trick<\/p>\n
The cuckoo on the hand
\nPulls off the truck each time
\nLays her egg in anothers nest
\nFor her life is sublime
\nShe knows she doesnt have to worry
\nSomeone else will care
