Avebury rose in my estimation
\nTo hanker in my soul
\nA metaphysical realization
\nOf existence as a role
\nWith little mechanization
\nBut for the power of man
\nGreat obelisks stand silent
\nLong centuries they span<\/p>\n
Enduring the eyes of many
\nThey cast their shadows wide
\nMere mortals may pay homage
\nAs others are denied
\nTheir privilege of history
\nOf what for them maybe
\nUnreal perhaps unfounded
\nBy historicity<\/p>\n
The sun was clearly positive
\nThe sky was clearly blue
\nThe rape was clearly yellow
\nGreat swathes of it did woo
\nThe avid eye, the beating heart
\nThe palpable the true
\nThese standing stones
\nThese hills these barrows
\nAll Ancient sites on view<\/p>\n
The Red Lion thatched and decked with
\nBaskets
\nGot to work to make
\nLunch for hungry diners
\nHopeful soon to take
\nThe valleys and the dingles
\nAnd the history to task
\nAll the ancient geometry
\nYou only had to ask<\/p>\n
The friends who came
\nWere relaxed, we lunched and chatted for a while
\nWe watched and took in all ot it
\nAnd Tried to reconcile
\nAll the splendid circles
\nFelt their weighty grin
\nA sanctuary of peacefulness
\nThat seemed to underpin<\/p>\n
Its really very striking
\nThe landscape one can see
\nAre we in awe of history
\nOr really can we be
\nImagining these unhewn stones
\nErected and in place
\nEarthworks of such a magnitude
\nJust there in our face<\/p>\n
Silbury hill the largest
\nArtificial mound to rise
\nA kind of spiral castle
\nPeering to the skies
\nMy disablement reminding me
\nHow futile is my worth
\nCompared to those who laboured long
\nWorking with the earth<\/p>\n
We are truly diminuitive
\nCosmology fading fast
\nThe imagery is too perhaps
\nBehold the light thats cast
\nOn these mysterious movements
\nThe mounts and dykes that do
\nWarrant a spot of dowsing
\nTo feel if its all true<\/p>\n

\nSharing a bit of gentle time
\nAn opportunity
\nTo walk a while
\nTo think a mile
