Chiroptera the winged hand
\nMammals that can fly
\nSuffering from the human trait
\nOf slagging them off
\nBut why
\nDid Bram Stoker cause confusion
\nWith Dracula where he
\nPlanted a seed in many a mind
\nAnd there in fact it be<\/p>\n
All bats are seen as eerie
\nIgnorantly some feel
\nThey are flying rodents
\nThat actually lack appeal
\nBut nothing could be further from the truth
\nIt must be said
\nFor the bats are insect devourers
\nSo let me put to bed<\/p>\n
The idea they are pest controllers
\nThey are wild souls of the night
\nThey live in roosts in caves and holes
\nMammals that gained flight
\nThey choose to hang upside down
\nAnd view the world that way
\nForagers of insects and beetles
\nAnd moths that come their way<\/p>\n
SClearly they eat insects
\nAs many as they can find
\nMosquito’s and their larvae
\nOf course they have dined
\nBut they require such energy
\nAnd nutrition is their key
\nSo they also take out moths and flies
\nAnd midges actually<\/p>\n
Some will take out beetles and june fbugs
\nAnd mayflies
\nSome will fly to street lamps
\nAnd hoover up those guys
\nIts unlikely they are mosquitos
\nMore likely moths me thinks
\nBut clearly they are consuming lots
\nWhen we have our 40 winks<\/p>\n
Birds too like the purple martin
\nAnd dragonflies consume
\nMosquito’s in their thousands
\nAnd damsel flies who loom
\nArOund consuming madly
\nAs do the frogs and toads
\nAnd also of course the tadpoles
\nAll of them eat loads<\/p>\n
The bigger bats eat beetles
\nGood nutrition there
\nAll part of the arsenal
\nThat GAIA has made aware
\nBalance is her modus operandi
\nAnd therefore
\nThats the realization
\nIts not what they are for<\/p>\n
To eat up all the mosquitos
\nEssentially they do
\nEat their share
\nSo its good they are there
\nBut equally its true
\nThey do eat other insects
\nThat give them greater fuel
\nCucumber beetles a delicacy
\nA kind of batty gruel<\/p>\n
That feeling of eerieness
\nDetracts from their esteem
\nThey surely are our flying friends
\nAnd if they reach our dream
\nIt should be in the positive
\nFor they are great beings and
\nThere are 1300 different types
\nFor us to understand<\/p>\n
