THere was a time when
\n60,000 Elephants roamed Uganda
\nNot so long ago in real terms
\nThey
\nThe architects of the environment
\nAble to sustain
\nAll the other animals
\nWith everything to gain<\/p>\n
From their footprint
\nThen agriculture raised its mechanical head
\nPeople moved in,mhunters moved in,habitats its said
\nWere taken by the humans
\nAnd elephants then saw
\nTheir numbers ravaged wretchedly
\nMore and more and more<\/p>\n
Were slaughtered by the hunters
\nTill the numbers dropped down to
\n1000 mostly orphans
\nVery very few
\nPushed into small corridors
\nIvory you see
\nMeant more to African business
\nThan the elephants so we<\/p>\n
Soon realised their demise was nigh
\nThis keynote species was
\nBeing shot from under out feet
\nReally just because
\nNobody was worried
\nAnd nobody much did care
\nBut now they are employing rangers
\nTo protect them everywhere<\/p>\n
Tourism is a big thing
\nIn Uganda today
\nAnd it doesnt make sense to kill the golden goose
\nNow, so lets say
\nThe rangers have made a difference
\nFor the heritage breeds must be
\nSaved from all this hunting
\nThats terrible to see<\/p>\n
THe far east was the market
\nFor Europe and the UK
\nHave banned articles made of it
\nBut still they get away
\nWith liars and cheats and officials
\nWho all turn a blind eye
\nWith money in their pockets
\nOfcourse the blighters lie<\/p>\n
Since the Idi Amin era Peace has been
\nThe order of the day
\nAnd the numbers have been increasing
\nTo some 5000 but still way
\nMore could be accomodated
\nIf they wanted to
\nSo wild life and conservation
\nAre doing now what they do<\/p>\n
Putting paid to the bad days
\nOf history that saw
\nThousands of deaths
\nFrom hunting parties
\nSome breaking the law
\nThe Poachers will to murder
\nThe elephants at will
\nIgnorant of their value
\nWhich now is growing still <\/p>\n
