Azores and the sanity of stopping whaling

To focus on the ethical
My mind dwells on Taiji
The Azores in mid Atlantic
Were whalers actually
So tradition said they kill whales
Always sperm whales for they
When they are hurt are easier
To kill thats what they say

But back in 1983 they decided
All in all
Whaling wasnt economic
And they answered the call
They respected the great whales
And the need to try
And watch them rather than murder them
And have found it works
And why

Because its really wonderful
That these iconic souls do come
To FAIAL and PICO and watchers
And there are some
Who clearly visit the Azores
Just to see the whales
And realise their beauty
and pay homage to their trails

Back when they were hunting
Killing 20,000 a year
All that blood and guts
And pain a stain
Created fear
Now its a truly lovely place
To holiday and know
Such a lovely aura
That really does just grow

Many many sailors come
To the islands they
Feel the positivity
The sea wall it does play
Into such uniqueness
Its where sailors leave their view
Really special works of art
Of every tone and hue

You feel relaxed about the place
But respect its unique charm
You feel that you are part of something
And, that sense of calm
Of the paradise around you
The ocean and the sky
The caves the rocks the whale watching
All of this is high

Of anybody’s expectation
And dreams one has to say
And the dolphins many many come
And Not one is made to pay
The people love the cetaceans
These volcanic islands are
Open for all nature lovers
Following their star

They really make a study now
Of looking after whales
Rubber boats go out to watch
And when those gigantic tails
Sink back into the ocean
People are moved to feel
A deep respect for every time
It happens for The appeal

Its really and truly moving
And emotional for some
To see this mountain of a beast
Whose great heart like a drum
Is close and it is sharing the oxygen
As we
Share it with our family the great whales
Of the sea

The sperm is the largest toothed whale
Its enormous and to see ,it no less than 50 yards away
With all its majesty
The venerable significance its an all embracing gain
Watchers look in awe at them
A reciprocol refrain

And this comes from a whaling nation
Who murdered thousands each year
For meat and wax and oil their attacks
By hand brought so much fear
Into the towns and around the cliffs
And now more of them come
Clearly they sense the safety
And for sure there are some

Many types of dolphins the risso’s
Who we know
Are often driven in Taiji
And murdered for the show
RIsso!s are more nervous
And try to stay away
But are safe along the coasts here
On any single day

It goes to show how empathy
And compassion can win through
There is no need to kill and maim
Its much better when we do
Conserve and care for GAIA’s children
As the people do
Whale watching is amazing
With so many now on view

And when you are there the harmony
Its the zenith in a way
Its the reason why you go there
Really as if to say
Its the finishing touch
Fulfilment
In everything you do
The city streets the cliff tops the harbour
Every view

Is positive, and beautiful
Its a joyful place to be
Ideal for a holiday
The portuguese must see
How blessed they are to have this place
So focused actually
There is something here for everyone
And endless boundless way
A point of time
When every rhyme
Slips from the pen to play

And the light is so abundant
And the colours of nature do
Feel just so immortal
Their permanence rings true
There is a modern feel and a mellowness
Really its got it all
THe Azores its doors are open
Why not give them a call

To focus on the ethical My mind dwells on Taiji The Azores in mid Atlantic Were whalers actually So tradition said they kill whales Always
