They live in Sulewesi
\nOld world monkeys they
\nLive in Tangkoko reserve
\nThats where they spend their day
\nHigh up in the canopy
\nAnd on the litter floor
\nLittle family groups
\nWho live their lives upon the shore<\/p>\n
Around the river in the river
\nAnd high up in the trees
\nAmazingly inquisitive
\nAttested symphonies
\nAround them human beings
\nWho ignorantly feel
\nThe need to buy their corpses
\nFor bushmeat does appeal<\/p>\n
In the market place
\nWild monkey parts
\nIllegally killed for they
\nAre actually protected
\nBut few now save the day
\nA troop live near the village
\nOf Batu Puteh they
\nAre clearly the indigenous
\nAnd their respects they pay<\/p>\n
Vibrant sensitive creatures
\nFamily orientated
\nAble to live in the wild
\nClearly they were fated
\nBut all around them killers
\nWho want to make a living
\nMurdering these wild souls
\nWho are very giving<\/p>\n
These old souls have a connectedness
\nWith the environment where they live
\nThey clearly love the water
\nWhich presently does give
\nThem much in the way of pleasure
\nOf relaxation too
\nA chance to be expressive
\nAnd to do what monkeys do<\/p>\n
Play and enjoy living
\nCreative to a tee
\nFortuitous and casual
\nAbout now where they be
\nAble to withstand the rain
\nHowever heavy for they
\nGenerally find a fan like plant
\nAnd under that they stay<\/p>\n
So they understand the difference
\nOf rain and river play
\nThey wash and preen each other
\nAnd respect comes into play
\nThey have that understanding
\nAnd each an identity
\nAbsorbed and interchangeable
\nEach nuance they can see<\/p>\n
More than 90 per cent of them
\nAre victims to the cause
\nA lack of understanding
\nWith very little pause
\nThe marketplace is growing
\nAs the wild supply do die
\nKilled off by the market place
\nWith no one caring why<\/p>\n

\nTo make a film to study them
\nAnd really ask folks why
\nThey felt the need to murder them
\nTo do away with those
\nWild indigenous animals
\nWho live in some repose<\/p>\n
Show them how they live infact
\nProve to them its right
\nNot to eat these old world monkeys
\nBringers of the light
\nTheir wildness is their attraction
\nTheir opportunity
\nEating them shows human beings
\nTheir real inadequacy<\/p>\n
Its is beyond description
\nIts ignorance of mind
\nIt won’t be long at this rate
\nWhen nobody will find
\nThese old world souls emerging
\nFrom their canopy
\nFor they will all be eaten
\nWithout humility<\/p>\n
Defeated by low orders
\nWhen a foreigner does appear
\nIn the market with a camera
\nApparently its clear
\nThey try to hide their bounty
\nTreat it with deceit
\nDeep down they know that it is wrong
\nTo offer this bush meat<\/p>\n
A film we made and showed them
\nIn an effort to create
\nSome interest in their being
\nMore than a sick debate
\nThe debacle of trapping them
\nOf blood and guts and pain
\nOf chopping them up in market
\nWith total dark disdain<\/p>\n
We broadcast we were showing
\nThe film and people came
\nCame to see the old world monkeys
\nAnd, really our claim
\nThat they were worth now saving
\nNot eating for they were
\nReally part and parcel of existence
\nAnd to infer<\/p>\n
Thet they were just best eaten
\nAnd lost to all the world
\nWasnt really a good idea
\nThey had not been hurled
\nInto this piece of jungle
\nTo be murdered and be maimed
\nFor us to eat it was not the case
\nWhatever traders claimed<\/p>\n
Its a paradise around them
\nRichly decked in green
\nAll manner of fruits and herbage
\nAn environment thats been
\nThere for many millenia
\nAnd it needs to continue through
\nAll our lives and our childrens lives
\nFor a future good and true<\/p>\n
They watched the film
\nThe children came and we took some
\nThere to see
\nLet them have a close up
\nOf the apes and how they be
\nTried infact to dissaude them
\nFrom eating them for they
\nHave a place in the equation
\nOf life on earth today<\/p>\n
