\nThe depression
\nHow could it be fun
\nWhen rockerfeller
\nDecided he
\nWould build
\nSkyscrapers
\nAnd would see<\/p>\n
Workers back a climbing high
\nEarning some wages
\nIn the sky<\/p>\n
Infact they came from everywhere
\nTo do their art work
\nIn the air<\/p>\n
Scaffolding and building
\nHigh
\n800 feet and thats no lie<\/p>\n
Columns pillars turrets towers
\nPerching hanging climbing powers
\nOne slip and that would be it
\nNo ropes no nets no place to sit<\/p>\n
Beams and girders piles and stakes
\nBalks and joists none of them fakes
\nAll of them heroes to the cause
\nGet on with it no time to pause<\/p>\n
Ladder scaling gradients steep
\nRising pitches ratlines deep
\nSo much danger every day
\nAnd in the wind it all could sway<\/p>\n
Just normal guys
\nWho liked to be
\nUp in the sky alone to see<\/p>\n
All the components erected and
\nFar below could understand<\/p>\n
Really defying gravity
\nCement and concrete and residue
\nAnd bricks and tiles and glass
\nAll through<\/p>\n
Stonework woodwork and risks galore
\nUp there a man had to be sure<\/p>\n
The howling winds the fading light
\nThe suns strong heat a frosty night<\/p>\n
Aching limbs and the ground below
\nOne slip and they all did know<\/p>\n
Confidence no second thoughts
\nThe comradeship and all those sorts<\/p>\n
Of emotions really that strengthen those
\nWhose courage really I suppose<\/p>\n
Was taken for granted in the end
\nEverybody was your friend<\/p>\n
They looked out for each other
\nAs best they could
\nThey had a job and it was good<\/p>\n
They developed a lot of self esteem
\nMost were modest so it would seem<\/p>\n
Skyscrapers loomed into the sky
\nBuilt on blood and guts and high<\/p>\n
Higher than they had gone before
\nThey were knocking on heavens door<\/p>\n
Up in the clouds on the gantry they
\nSat their having their luch each day<\/p>\n
These were the men who were put to task
\nThey would do it if you did ask<\/p>\n
The scaffold workers who climbed real high
