The absoluteness of existence
\nIn their presence one can feel
\nAll the potentiality
\nAnd what it does reveal
\nTo the heart to the human spirit
\nTo those who love them so
\nThe positive and historicity
\nIntrinsically we know<\/p>\n
They truly are immortal
\nExisting as they do
\nA reminder of prehistory
\nAnd how they continue
\nEach valued incarnation
\nSo tangible so true
\nThe Rhinocerus of Africa
\nConsiderable and true<\/p>\n
At Kariega Game Reserve
\nOn the 2nd of March we found
\nThree friends of ours so brutally poached
\nLying on the ground
\nThey had been shot with tranquillisers
\nAnd machetes then were used
\nTo hack off their precious horns
\nAnd how they were abused
\nAnd left to bleed out
\nIn great pain
\nIn pools of blood they lay
\nTwo were breathing one was gone
\nHow Can one find a way<\/p>\n
Of seeing and not feeling
\nThose poacher men they must
\nBe evil to the point of unbelievable
\nDarkness thrust
\nThese magnificent Specimens
\nReduced to blood and gore
\nFor a horn of basic keratin
\nWe have to ask what for?<\/p>\n
How can any human being
\nLower their sights to this
\nDrag their vile insanity
\nTo animals whose bliss
\nIs evident before their eyes
\nHow can this be right
\nWhat low life could imagine
\nAnd do this in the light<\/p>\n
Our hearts sank and our tearful
\nEyes wept what could we do
\nTo save them using all we had
\nWe tried Themba a clue
\nHe was in there fighting still
\nBut bursting with such grief
\nThankfully he was still alive
\nAnd clearly had belief<\/p>\n
When you work with these animals
\nYou just have to admire
\nTheir resilience and their utter power
\nTheir immense hearts of fire
\nThis was indiscriminate aggression
\nOn supremacy untamed
\nAnd we had to see them lying there
\nTheir spirit still unclaimed<\/p>\n
The trauma on a vast scale
\nWith consciousness still there
\nTHemba stood up clearly hopeful
\nOne more he could share
\nAnd so the work of saving him
\nWith antibiotics and care
\nAnd Thandi too we set to work
\nEveryone aware<\/p>\n
It wasn’t going to be easy
\nBut we all had a way
\nOf giving everything we had
\nTo them now everyday
\nWe had to help them through this
\nWe had to give them more
\nIf we could give our life’s blood
\nWe couldnt have given them more<\/p>\n
Then 24 days later
\nTHemba went along
\nTo the waterhole to drink
\nFell in and still was none too strong
\nAnd drowned he drowned poor soul of mine
\nHe fought hard but was weak
\nSlipped and fell a frantic spell
\nAnd died to frail to speak<\/p>\n
Powerless then to right himself
\nHelpless in many ways
\nFlagging clearly overstrained
\nBut worthy of great praise
\nHe fought so hard to make it
\nHe took on so much pain
\nAnd he was getting stronger
\nBut it was all in vain<\/p>\n
When we found him well it broke our hearts
\nWe felt helpless thinking he
\nMust have reached a desperate place
\nWhen no one heard his plea
\nTHandi on the other hand she
\nGot better she
\nAlso became pregnant
\nWith that possibility<\/p>\n
Of a miracle of creation
\nComing to us to see
\nTo experience the elation
\nOf life on Earth and be
\nA great gift For a mother
\nWho had fought off such a scene
\nAnd got back into life again
\nAs if she had never been<\/p>\n
Under so much trauma
\nAnd what of course they do
\nIs leave and search for deep bush
\nTheir independence true
\nInstinctively it happens
\nThey have to go away
\nIt’s what wild animals have to do
\nFated so to say<\/p>\n
She was chipped and that meant
\nWe could find her we
\nCould go and try and find her
\nSee where she could be
\nWe knew it would deep bush
\nProbably far away
\nShe a victim of the worst incident
\nTo pay<\/p>\n
That price she had to flourish
\nShe had to seek a place
\nAnd go through birth alone
\nProvide a safe base
\nAnd when we traced her where abouts
\nOur eyes could feast upon
\nA beautiful calf a miracle
\nWith all our sadness gone
\nAnd such a potent life force
\nAnd joyful energy
\nA kind of impetuosity
\nThe kingdom of the free<\/p>\n
A tonic for our spirit
\nSo vibrant and so cute
\nVigorously pulling on this or that
\nSweet root
\nA gravity a magnetism
\nFlowing Everywhere
\nA catalyst for hope perhaps
\nAnd a story all could share<\/p>\n
Out of the darkness and evil comes a bright flame
