How could CITES ever contemplate
\nA time when they
\nKnew the war against the pachyderms
\nWas on
\nBut they looked away
\nAll that intimidation
\nThat chauvinistic gore
\nThe bloodshed and attrition
\nEach skirmish sad and raw<\/p>\n
Broke through hearts and minds
\nAnd souls and invasion of pure wrath
\nAs the elephant herds did wander
\nOn their chosen path
\nPacifists in so many ways
\nNon combatants in fact
\nSubjected to such aggression
\nTheir offensive backed<\/p>\n
By go betweens and trouble shooters
\nOut there on the tracks
\nNegotiating peace and truth
\nWarding off attacks
\nContingents of the mercenaries
\nAnd others who would sell
\nTheir own souls for a pittance
\nAnd ride back into hell<\/p>\n
To use stealth and pugnacity
\nIn defiance of the true
\nAnd with their reckless provocation
\nRun the great ones through
\nChallenging their countenance
\nAnd then stealing away
\nWith their tusks torn off their body
\nIn an arrogant display<\/p>\n
Disharmony and dissonance
\nDisunion we see
\nTo quarrel with the Giants
\nUsing so much infamy
\nResourceful machination
\nAnd an ambush possibly
\nSupplying the black markets
\nAnd the guileful trickery<\/p>\n
A battle ground where the innocent
\nFell their screams unheard
\nWatched over by the vultures
\nWho heard their every word
\nThe jackals and the others
\nReady to consume
\nWhat was left though now bereft
\nOf life
\nJust doom and gloom<\/p>\n
And CITES flexing muscles
\nNeeded to be strong
\nTo establish its authority
\nTo join up every throng
\nIt’s supremacy now evident
\nThe planet too could feel
\nThe need to protect the Giants
\nWhose majesty was real<\/p>\n
Harassment and oppression
\nAnd pitiless contempt
\nThe despotic were created
\nReally their attempt
\nTo persecute and victimize
\nWith malevolence and pain
\nTo subjugate the innocent
\nAnd trumpet their refrain<\/p>\n
Ivory so sought after
\nOut there in the East
\nAs China began growing
\nThe nature of the beast
\nThe richer climbed their ladders
\nWanting there to be
\nObjects in their households
\nMade of Ivory<\/p>\n
Menial to that point
\nUnderlings let’s say
\nWith a freedom of expression
\nAnd a bond to pass their way
\nAn unravelling of classes
\nAnd a need to impress
\nTo own A piece of Ivory
\nAnd never want for less<\/p>\n
China’s poor were richer
\nAnd alas they didn’t see
\nThat wanting to move up
\nThe social ladder and be free
\nTook it on themselves
\nTo look for ivory to buy
\nNot actually thinking
\nThat elephants must die<\/p>\n
Ignorance was widespread
\nArrogance was too
\nThe overtures of freedom
\nWith their light came
\nFlooding through
\nMerchants well they are everywhere
\nHucksters and the rest
\nBlack markets and the darkly set
\nSurely there to test<\/p>\n
The dirge though filled the heavens
\nSocial media exclaimed
\nMillions of tiny voices
\nReached out all inflamed
\nTelling the true story
\nOf the pachyderms lament
\nOf the ivory how it was stolen
\nAnd great lives were spent<\/p>\n
Their beauty and sublimity
\nTheir nobility so grand
\nGiants ranging splendidly
\nOver the vast land
\nOf Africa attesting to the need
\nTo wander far
\nGreat herds etching pathways
\nAnd following their star<\/p>\n
