For 22 months I’ve carried him
\nand now his time has come
\nHe falls onto the dusty plain
\nheart beating like a drum
\nHe wobbles, trying to find his feet
\nno synchronization, yet
\nand we quickly find a watering hole
\nwhere everyone gets wet.<\/p>\n
our skin is thick and sensitive
\nand U V Light can harm
\nso its good to swish some mud
\naround, for really that does calm
\nMy calf, has found my nipples
\nand loves what I provide
\n25 pints of creamy milk taken
\ndown inside.<\/p>\n
He knows also to take some poo
\nmy pre-digested stuff
\nMy baby likes to eat it
\nfor there’s nutrient enough
\nI only get about 6 hours of shut eye
\nwhen its hot
\nSo I flap my ears
\ncreating a breeze
\nyea on the spot<\/p>\n
As the days pass,
\nmy calf totters
\nforward and backwards, He
\nWill have to fall
\nand then get up
\nand follow frantically
\nall the other ladies

Our structural Social order

The eyesights not sensational
\nbut I know
\nmost leaves are green,
\nits true I don’t see far ahead
\nbut I know where I have been
\nWhen a crowd of us are a’rambling,
\nwe tend to create, We
\nKnock a few trees over,
\nand eat incessantly
\nOnly about 40%, is digested its a shame
\nthe rest comes out the other end,
\nlooking about the same
\nway that it went in,
\nand so our need to eat and eat
\nwe like to browse for hours and hours
\non our great big padded feet.<\/p>\n
barks and fruits and grass and herbs
\nabout 4 hundred weight
\nand habitat destruction
\nat an alarming rate
\nand all those awful Poacher men
\nwith fire sticks and lead balls
\nwhen they come up to us and fire
\ntis then some falls<\/p>\n
the graveyard then is visited
\nwe pay our last respects
\nthey kill us for our ivory
\nthough this business does vex
\nwhat it is, about them
\nyou humans why you need
\nTo take us out
\nand cut away our tusks
\nbased on such greed<\/p>\n
its such a waste
\nto slaughter us
\nBecause we’re so like you
\n50 – 70 years we walk this earth
\nOh! yes we do
\nwe growl,we blow our trumpets
\nand we do use infra sound
\nwhich is sub sonic and
\nmoronic
\nand rolls across the ground.<\/p>\n
Through the National Parks such places
\nwhere some Rangers do the rounds
\nBut the Poachers still come tragically
\nwhich is worse now than it sounds
\nwe can then end up in circuses across the USA
\nor working in Laotian forests slaving everyday
\nat the moment we are fortunate
\nwild and full of zest
\nbut any moment, the surprise
\ntrapped and going West.<\/p>\n
We love the swamps that swallow
\nup our calves all grey
\na writhing mass of wrinkles
\nto pass the time of day
\nand when the night clouds hover
\nI remember those who fell
\nwho took a bullet through the heart
\nfrom those Poacher men from Hell<\/p>\n
I have seen that cold stare in their eyes
\nand remember 2 or 3
\nand I’m ready for them
\nif again any of them, I see
\nI remember when the forests
\nwere lush and full of trees
\nand very few young humans but now
\nthey seem to squeeze<\/p>\n
into almost every clearing
\nTheir huts are everywhere
\nAnd its really getting difficult
\nTo get beyond despair
\nSo that becomes our problem
\nour habitat is lost
\nand closer encounters of the human kind
