Thirty years ago or so
\nXintang you could say was born
\nThey started making jeans for export
\nReaching their new dawn
\nThey had some good cheap labour
\nAnd raw materials too
\nAnd a high percentage of artisans
\nWho really really knew
\nHow to do things properly
\nAnd quickly too for they
\nWere geared up and were able
\nTo take business away<\/p>\n
From Anerica and Britain
\nAnd the government helped too
\nProviding loans and helping
\nTo get the contracts through
\nThe problem is with new things
\nThe outlook can be good
\nBut pollution can be overlooked
\nNot because it should
\nBut the race to get to top notch
\nAt Exporting means that we
\nSometimes cut some corners
\nAnd regret it actually<\/p>\n
And really that’s what happened
\nAs it was done by hand
\nDischarging the indigo
\nThey didnt understand
\nOther toxic materials
\nWere going to be a pain
\nBut they got on with the contracts
\nAnd let the bad stuff drain<\/p>\n
Out into the rivers
\nWhere people’s houses were
\nWhere shanties just hung over
\nAnd pollution did occur
\nAnd the people they were upset
\nThey complained as well they might
\nThe water they were using
\nIt just was not al right<\/p>\n
So the dust was blue
\nAnd the water too
\nAnd the chemicals they used
\nWere really ratheR rotten
\nIn essence they abused
\nTheir own dear workers
\nSadly
\nAnd as trade increased so
\nThe problem really git out of hand
\nBut they were in the know<\/p>\n
And green peace came to call on them
\nBut the people they could see
\nThe rivers the pearl river
\nAnd the tributary was running blue
\nAnd sludge was appearing
\nNot a pretty sight
\nTechnology was thought about
\nThey had to get it right<\/p>\n
So a clean up had to take place
\nThe homes around there gone
\nCompensation paid of course
\nBut the clean up did go on
\nThe colour of the water has now changed up to green
\nAs trade is being hit somewhat
\nThe whole big Jean machine<\/p>\n
Is slowing up considerably
\nAs labour costs are raised
\nRaw materials too cost more
\nAnd technology has phased
\nPerceptions about pollution
\nAnd so things have been done
\nManufacturing processes
\nOut there in the sun<\/p>\n
Still see pollutive disregards
\nIt happens everywhere
\nNobody is perfect
\nBut at least now people care
\nThey do use rotten chemicals
\nWhich affect the people who
\nHave to use them everyday
\nAs of course they do<\/p>\n
We want these blue jeans it seems
\nAnd with all sorts of hues
\nSand blasted rope dyed slasher dyed.
\nIt won’t make for good news
\nAnd with Bangladesh and Vietnam
\nAnd India on stream
\nNot as au fait with pollution
\nAnd hopeful they can cream<\/p>\n
Some of this business off the Chinese
\nIt is a frantic call
\nThe great big corporations
\nWatch you go to the wall
\nRather than pay fairer prices
\nIt’s a hard affair
\nSo often the environment suffers
\nAnd the people have to share<\/p>\n
The risks too but it’s buyers
\nTying the hands of those
\nEntrepreneurs who are after profits
\nAs everybody knows
\nJuggling with all the rules
\nIt is no mean idea
\nBut China seems to have done its best
\nAllaying some of the
\nFear<\/p>\n
It doesn’t mean it’s all over
\nBut at least it’s on the cards
\nAt least the workers are aware
