A metaphor for the cyclic state
\nOf birth death and rebirth
\nJohn Barleycorn whose avid joy
\nA grain with so much worth
\nWith rose coloured and gold lashes
\nOn the Andes you should see
\nA grass grown in that windswept place
\nWhere rhymes come easily<\/p>\n
In the valley of volcanoes
\nBarley patches hang
\nIn the pinks of morning light
\nIt’s long awned spikes that rang
\nOut the voice of reasoning
\nThe spirit of the time
\nChopped down and processed
\nInto food
\nAnd adding to our chyme<\/p>\n
As a gruel to calm the stomach
\nAs bread to strengthen soul
\nAs an ale to quench the spirit
\nAs a malt soon to console
\nProcessed into whisky
\nFrom the green grasses of home
\nA hot drink in the winter
\nWith its bitterness to roam<\/p>\n
The mountainsides, the rugged slopes
\nThe wicker man and all
\nThe exuberance of Autumn
\nJohn barleycorn may call
\nThe animals together
\nAnd feed them one by one
\nThe barley brew that’s warming
\nFor It comes with summers sun<\/p>\n
The sweetness of the malting
\nMugi in Japan
\nSalted into miso
\nIt’s how it all began
\nIt’s vibrancy was obvious
\nAnd in its prime we found
\nThe harvest was predictable
\nAcross the valiant ground<\/p>\n
We learned it thus removing
\nThe husk as harsh and some
\nand Thickened up our winter broths
\nWhen the frost made our hands numb
\nWe drank the malted liquor
\nAnd the stronger Barley Wine
\nAnd we sat beside a raging fire
\nAnd let our heart entwine<\/p>\n
JOhn Barleycorn An avid soul
\nWho shows us all how right
\nHe takes the seed and sows it
\nEach clod proves at the height
\nThe harvest at the Equinox
\nProvides a yearning for
\nThose who dance in situ
