From outer space
\nthey can be seen
\nThe Tar Sand ponds
\nthe moral question
\nwhere have you been?
\nmade of sand
\nand leaking out
\nthe poisons
\nthat they all knew about<\/p>\n
once a Boreal forest tall
\nits living wealth
\nwas shared by all
\ntrees gave oxygen
\nproviding what
\nall could understand<\/p>\n
crisp fresh air
\nwas the way to go
\nbut beneath the surface
\nthe sands we know
\nthe dark satanic mills
\nwhere we
\ncould scrape the filth
\neternally<\/p>\n
and so we did
\nwhat no man before
\nhas done
\nwe razed to the ground
\nand more
\nwe brought in great trucks
\nand machinery
\nand began to create
\nthe energy<\/p>\n
Alberta’s eyes
\nwere becoming sore
\nas the carbon rose
\nand the tailings soar
\narsenic and lead
\ndrawn from the deep
\nto poison the fish
\nas the people sleep<\/p>\n
to poison the air
\nto poison the stream
\nto create a nightmare
\nas children dream
\nhydrocarbon exposures
\ntoo
\ncoming to a village close
\nto You<\/p>\n
soft tissue sarcoma’s
\nunheard of and rare
\nsomehow were heard
\nsometimes as a prayer
\ncould be heard in the forest
\nthe footprints though gone
\nthe light became dark
\nwhere the sun had once shone<\/p>\n
Vast profits for some
\nmigratory birds
\nlanded on ponds
\nand there were no words
\nto describe the new evil
\nwhich created the case
\nas they sank in the oil
\nlost without trace<\/p>\n
The First Nation peoples
\nwere feeling such pain
\nthey could see that their mother
\nwas crying again
\nthey feared the worse
\nfor they knew the best
\nhad been sacrificed clearly
\nand was not addressed<\/p>\n
the balance of Nature
\ndegraded before
\nthe eyes of the seeing
\nthat many ignore
\nthe Natural World
\nas the beat of its drum
\nthe energy called
\nand they clearly had some<\/p>\n
pipelines were dug
\nto send the black gold
\nevery which way
\nfor on this they were sold
\nacross many highways
\nand byways it went
\nunder streams, under creeks
\nits passage was mean’t<\/p>\n
Big Oil was rubbing
\nits big hands with glee
\nthe dirtiest oil
\nwas good therapy
\nthe Michigan oil spill
\ncame out of the blue
\nand reached down as far as the
\nKalamazoo<\/p>\n
cracks had developed
\nsome years before
\nbut for 17 hours it spilled out
\nand what’s more
\nit was undetected
\nthey were unaware
\nand it flushed through the land
\nlike nothing before<\/p>\n
ongoing stress and sickness
\nand pain
\nlike the vilest of armies
\nno one could contain
\nwild life took big hits
\nthe people did too
\nland owners and villagers
\nclearly, they drew<\/p>\n
on their strength and their
\nfortitude
\nbut gradually
\nit wore them all down
\nso exposed as we see
\nit spewed every which way
\nvile to the extreme
\nthe army of neon
\nand big oil’s machine<\/p>\n
people have suffered
\nthe land has been made
\nthe air is polluted
\nthe Tar Sands have laid
\nwaste to an area
\nof scenic sights
\nturning their sunniest
\ndays
\ninto nights
\nand now its Obama
\nwho seemingly can
\ncreate in his wisdom
\nThe great Keystone plan
\nthe mother of all pipelines
\nwhich will ensure
\nan energy source
\nthat BIG OIL does adore<\/p>\n
the dirtiest oil
\nrunning all of those miles
\nthrough the bowels of the earth
\neclipsing the dials
\nshould another spill happen
\nand happen it will
\nthere does not exist money
\nto pay that great bill<\/p>\n
the soundness of judgement
\nthe greed of the few
\nthe hopes and the prayers
\nof people like you<\/p>\n
