What a corporate menace
\nA housing of the poor
\nA collection of victims
\nSpread about the floor
\nThey are far from grounded though
\nMany from afar
\nIt’s all about endurance
\nAnd as to where they are<\/p>\n
In ZOOS a kind of vacuum
\nWhere emptiness is seen
\nImaginary habitat
\nWhere light has never been
\nThe naturalness of living
\nIn a dark and dreary place
\nIs meaningless for every soul
\nWho peers into your face<\/p>\n
Tries to make some contact
\nTo appeal to you And say
\nCan’t you feel the tragedy
\nThat is my life today
\nThe problem is the people
\nWho pay to come and see
\nWhat is Infact an endorsement
\nTo pure adversity<\/p>\n
The Victorians were Curious
\nThey were hypocrites in fact
\nCases cages pens and enclosures
\nHow did we react
\nTo forcing the wild animals
\nInto a drab affair
\nWhen we stole Them from their freedom
\nAnd dumped them any where<\/p>\n
Harmony was non existent
\nAs a consequence we found
\nSo many victims just went mad
\nAnd or walked around and around
\nBored out of existence
\nLeft without resource
\nWhy did we interfere with them
\nOr capture them by force<\/p>\n
We imagined we were superior
\nWe had the better way
\nPut them all in enclosures
\nAnd people would come and pay
\nTo see the many under dogs
\nIn a menial embrace
\nWith slovenliness and disarray
\nAnd what was a disgraced<\/p>\n
Really much confusion
\nUndisciplined and wrong
\nIn cramped and airless places
\nWhere they did not belong
\nAll their natural elements
\nHad been taken away
\nAnd they were left in a maelstrom
\nOf threats most every day<\/p>\n
The ZOO that concrete edifice
\nThat establishment where we
\nTook ourselves to get a glimpse
\nOf the wild nobility
\nThe animals dragged screaming
\nFrom the countries where they were born
\nTorn away from families
\nIn a really violent dawn<\/p>\n
They took on their membership
\nIn our frightful and vile place
\nPrisoners without recourse
\nAll for the human race
\nTo ponder over to think about
\nTo taunt maybe to stare
\nRepetition their new reward
\nFor really being there<\/p>\n
Time would be the essence
\nEach semester they would learn
\nThe neverness and eternity
\nThe datelessness concern
\nSheer boredom and the effect of it
\nAnd the inability
\nTo be disempowered by the humans
\nFor what is eternity<\/p>\n
A real desolation
\nA carnage of ones soul
\nA poverty of spirit
\nWhen one has lost one’s role
\nIn life it’s just a torpor
\nThat follows one about
\nA general immobility
\nA sluggishness and doubt<\/p>\n
It’s a kind of general atrophy
\nOf the surroundings where
\nInstinctively the memory
\nHad pictures one could share
\nThe tall trees and flowing rivers
\nThe mountains and the sky
\nAnd now your box of nothing less
\nThan a constipated lie<\/p>\n
Wild rats and mice would visit
\nThe bugs and roaches too
\nBut very little sunlight
\nA distortion all through
\nGestureless and poker faced
\nBenumbed one now might say
\nVegetating in the soup of what is night
\nAnd day<\/p>\n
Divergent and separated from the order of the hour
\nA terminus for all of us
\nBerthed to extract our power
\nFood is generally thrown at us
\nSlimy and sometimes stale
\nBut it’s something we all look forward to
\nFrom the daily trail<\/p>\n
Our water clearly often dank
\nAnd full of bits and we
\nShare it with the rodents and the birds
\nToo, all who see
\nThe need to wet their tiny throats
\nOur need is also there
\nMankind is never really kind
\nAnd never ever fair<\/p>\n
The heat can drive us crazy
\nThe cold can do that too
\nAll the extremes upset us
\nThe decay which is all through
\nOur structures kind of rotten
\nAnd the lack of cleaning too
\nOften we lay upon our mess
\nFor there is nothing else we can do<\/p>\n
A zoo is not a holiday camp
\nIt’s a concentration where
\nEveryone who lives and breathes
\nIs covered in despair
\nIt’s those dismal murky moments
\nThat come to us each night
\nThe pale horse bolted long ago
\nAnd has been out of sight<\/p>\n
For many years and all the fears
\nAre with us we can say
\nConditioned by surroundings
\nWe let intuition play
\nOut into the darkness
\nDreams of bygone days
\nAnd the precariousness of living
\nJust kind of allays<\/p>\n
The genuine sub strata
\nAnd inspiration we
\nSometimes get and think about
\nIn our reality
\nBut the stillness and the futility
\nOf this really awful cell
\nThe congenital behaviour
