A nifty little fellow
\nWebbed feet a ducks bill too
\nVenom like a wriggly snake
\nAnd lays eggs
\nYes they do<\/p>\n
Mostly underwater
\nOr, under the ground
\nThey build their nesting burrows
\nAnd are most hard to be found<\/p>\n
Tasmania’s high plateaus
\nAlong Australia’s Eastern coast
\nThe strangest of little animals
\nReally loves to coast<\/p>\n
Along the shaded hollows
\nIn wild rivers where they
\nCan catch all sorts of little shrimps
\nAnd worms and yes larvae<\/p>\n
They are very very sensitive
\nSo hard to pin down
\nThey burrow for thirty metres
\nThey really go to town<\/p>\n
At staying very private
\nThat is what they do
\nThey love the reeded rivers
\nFor them that is good and true<\/p>\n
No change in their design
\nFrom when they first came on this earth
\nClearly they were perfect then
\nAnd honestly are worth <\/p>\n
A great deal more of study
\nPeculiar quirky souls
\nAnd much like the Echidna
\nWith Egg laying mammal roles<\/p>\n
Living very solitary lives
\nTill the female comes on heat
\nAnd then the males all congregate
\nThe Echidna train compete<\/p>\n
Four or five will chase her
\nBut only one can win
\nThe one who likes her pheromones
\nWill be taken for his spin<\/p>\n
North of Queensland in Australia
\nIn the rainforest thats up there
\nPlatypus can often be seen
\nOn the surface their despair<\/p>\n
And being seen is obvious
\nFor danger clearly can
\nFrighten them they are vulnerable
\nIt can all do down the pan<\/p>\n
They prefer the muddy tributaries
\nAnd go up creeks to feed
\nReceptors in their bills
\nVibrations can lead<\/p>\n
Them to their food precisely
\nAnd to females as well
\nIts quite an attractive courtship
\nFor they dance so I have heard tell<\/p>\n
Rolling in the water
\nAround and around they go
\nThen back down to their burrow
\nWhere all the love does flow<\/p>\n
Maybe three eggs on the way
\nThe miracle of life
\nAnd all this action takes place
\nWith very little strife<\/p>\n
Remember the Duck Billed Platypus
\nA quirky little soul
\nWho if he spreads his venom
\nIt is bound to bowl<\/p>\n
You over really for several weeks
\nIts very painful and
\ntry not to get bitten
