Existence is absoluteness
\nin the perpetual day
\nWith stamina and with spirit
\nYou really make your way
\nA pair of apex predators
\nTheir legion to control
\nWith instinct and intelligence
\nAnd of course a lot of soul<\/p>\n
Seven feisty fellows
\nA really wily bunch
\nProjecting lots of confidence
\nAnd now quite a punch
\nAround the Rockies lowland plains
\nRidges and river too
\nA densely wooded area
\nSo cover that is true<\/p>\n
Mountains in The background
\nThat climb into the sky
\nWith jagged snow clad summits
\nThat do rise rather high
\nA silver male and black female
\nHost this little troop
\nFour cubs and an outsider
\nPresent a successful group<\/p>\n
They all are expert hunters
\nThey know each other well
\nThey work together beautifully
\nTo bring their victims hell
\nWhen they out there hunting
\nGiving it their all
\nIts January and the heavy snow
\nIs really beginning to fall<\/p>\n
The small mammals hibernate
\nThat is what they do
\nSo its only really Buffalo and Elk
\nThat are on view
\nThe wolves are very agile
\nAnd built to run and run
\nUp to 50 km a day
\nBefore they feel undone<\/p>\n
Its experience that gets them through
\nThe instinctive expectation
\nTheir relation to each other
\nAnd their solid creation
\nThey hold mental maps a plenty
\nAnd a memory to match
\nTheir brains are so much bigger
\nThan the domestic dog
\nSo catch
\nThat thought perhaps some thirty
\nPer cent more
\nAnd the knowledge thats always there
\nWith their scent marking and howling ways
\nThe great unknown they share<\/p>\n
The wilderness of wonderment
\nThe chemicals they use
\nTo ward off would be intruders
\nOr even other crews
\nWho may be inclined to infiltrate
\nTheir kingdom in the snow
\nThey lay their boundaries effectively
\nAs all newcomers know<\/p>\n
They have extremely sensitive
\nNoses and they can
\nRefresh the hots spots often
\nThis really all began
\nSo as to protect their territory
\nWhich all wolves must do
\nClearly obvious signposts
\nBasically all through<\/p>\n
They have their recognition
\nTheir expressions that they use
\nDominance and submission
\nReally they refuse
\nTo fight and injure anyone
\nIts harmony they need
\nPlayful reassurance
\nThat all of them succeed<\/p>\n
With cubs around its essential
\nThat the parents do not leave
\nFor hungry grizzlies may be about
\nHoping to achieve
\nA den of cubs can satisfy
\nThe rumblings of the bear
\nAnd with the departure of the mother
\nAlas her cubs he did share<\/p>\n
He needed some fresh protein
\nAnd she heard is raucous growls
\nBut by the time she retraced her steps
\nDespite her aggressive howls
\nHe had finished off her family
\nBones and all were gone
\nAnd she had lost this years cubs
\nHer sun had briefly shone<\/p>\n
To vanish in the heavens
\nTo scramble and to see
\nIf they could find some protein too
\nTo feed the family
\nThe animals they could try and catch
\nWere the big horn sheep
\nBut they
\nhad massive armoured head gear
\nNo push over today<\/p>\n
The Moose a spectacular solitary
\nTo large and clever too
\nSo unless the beast is sickening
\nIt would not be good to do
\nThe Elk maybe were worth a chase
\nThey were headed further East
\nA journey to the valleys
\nTo hopefully then feast<\/p>\n
Some of them would be pregnant
\nAnd week from struggling on
\nNit a lot of food about
\nTheir fat reserves all gone
\nBut close to the Northern borders
\nInto the larger packs domain
\nThey would have to try and contain them
\nFor it could be quite insane<\/p>\n
So for seven hours they followed
\nThe weather had been mild
\nEach would have a calf with them
\nRunning with a child
\nRaises the odds for the wolf boys
\nWho must be on their game
\nAnd they saw one that was limping
\nNot a claim to fame<\/p>\n
The wolves have a sublimity
\nAnd a recognition they
\nCan see a weakness at a glance
\nAnd communicate away
\nIf one is carrying an injury
\nThe wolves will suss it out
\nAnd run them down in quick time
\nAnd thats without a doubt<\/p>\n
But this lot tried to scarper
\nAnd the border they crossed o’re
\nTwo of them were on the beast
\nTrying to make sure
\nBut it was down outside their land
\nA dangerous place to be
\nSo all they could do was gorge themselves
\nAnd on seeing the pack run free<\/p>\n
They had cross ed the line
\nInto no mans land
\nTheir invisible boundary
\nAnd they had to get a move on fast
\nOr end up history
\nThis can happen sometimes
\nHours spent on the trail
\nAnd then something just happens
\nAnd actually they fail<\/p>\n
But they managed to take
\nQuite some rump
\nAnd belly and they would
\nKeep it in their belly
\nAnd in their pouches
\nAs they should
\nTheir rivals claimed their benefit
\nStretching the sinew long
\nTearing the muscle
\nIts quite some tussle
\nAnd dragging the innards along<\/p>\n
february and real thick snow
\nGrazing is bound to get
\nHarder and harder and it slows them down
\nFor the wolves and bears seem set
\nAgain the wolves are searching
\nAlways after prey
\nInto march and the snow comes down
\nAnd its then when the ruminants pay<\/p>\n
Not enough green leaves
\nNo shoots at all
\nThe Solitary Moose must be
\nWeaker and weaker by the day
\nSo they head over to see
\nA sky of pink and indigo
\nComes the turn of night
\nThe wolves decide to supper
\nIt feels that the time is right<\/p>\n
Clearly the moose will be hungry
\nA really big beast are they
\n2 metres tall and 300kilos
\nThats something and you can say
\nThat is a formidable fellow
\nThe alpha is well on his scent
\nThrough the dense trees
\nWith sublimate ease
\nClearly he is very content<\/p>\n
Picking up hairs skin and
\nFarts too
\nThe high fibre diet
\nIts what Moose’s do
\nThe wolf’s nostrils
\nWorking now overtime they
\nKnow the beast sick
\nIt has ticks
\nAnd an array of problems
\nSo badly infested and weak
\nAnd the stench of pus
\nThat peculiar reek
\nAll from the scent
\nHow effective they are
\nAnd all this at night
\nNot one to spar<\/p>\n
With one on ones journey
\nSoon it would be
\nDowned and all eaten
\nIt history
\nKaleidoscope eyes
\nThat hang in the night
\nBold as the brass
\nPicked out by the light<\/p>\n
Dead on its feet
\nThe great moose is gone
\nThe teeth of the pack
\nAre heavy upon
\nDrinking its blood
\nAnd its organs too
\nAnd filling their stomachs
\nWith protein anew<\/p>\n
Moving on its now April
\nIts warmer by far
\nThose in hibernation
\nWake up soon to star
\nIn Springs emanation
\nA good time to be
\nA wolf thats when food
\nIs abundantly
\nThere for the taking
\nWhen squabbles can rise
\nIn the packs some attacks
\nIts no real surprise<\/p>\n
When puppies are born
\nAnd love seems to be
\nPart of wolf life
\nFresh spirit we see
\nThat big troop have split
\nOnly 5 wolves are left
\nDown by the river
\nSoon are bereft if their kill
\nTo a grizzly
\nWho manages too
\nMuscle in on them
\nThats what grizzlies do<\/p>\n
A year with the wolves
\nThe order of things
\nThe turn of the seasons
\nAnd all that brings
\nThe continuity
\nWe’ve seen it all
\nWe ran with them ate with them
\nAnswered their call<\/p>\n
