The existence of whales
\nIn the oceans of life
\nTheir very survival
\nFrom the blight and the strife
\nCreated by man and his worldly pursuit
\nAnd his readiness really to run with the brute<\/p>\n
Stubborn realities
\nClouded each urge
\nFrom a vacuum sometimes
\nThe angels emerge
\nThey see the extinction of greatness
\nAnd feel
\nA cause for nirvana
\nAnd visionary zeal<\/p>\n
Iceland a country created with fire
\nOut of the ocean from purest desire
\nIt leapt from the depths
\nTo be born in the blue
\nWith its chasms and geysers
\nAnd ruggedness too<\/p>\n
Its people have courage
\nThey fight for the right
\nFor their inherent beauty
\nAnd of course the white light
\nTheir ethos to follow
\nThe natural way
\nWith humour and temper
\nEach and every day<\/p>\n
Once they were whalers
\nSteadfast and strong
\nThey plundered the ocean
\nYet saw it was wrong
\nTo kill the great beast
\nThe magnificent ones
\nFor their blubber and fat
\nWith their explosive guns<\/p>\n
And they themselves got to thinking
\nIn this day and age
\nThe cetacean god forms
\nHad swum off their page
\nThey were all perfection
\nA class of their own
\nSuperior beings
\nAs always was known<\/p>\n
They learned to respect them
\nTheir great vocal cries
\nThat spread through the ocean
\nAnd into the skies
\nBeyond human spirit
\nTo lodge in the heart
\nIn the soul of the angel
\nThat just for a start<\/p>\n
And so from this year
\nThe whalers have said
\nICELAND stands proud
\nNot another whale dead
\nWill bleed in our seas
\nOn our sands
\nNot again
\nWill we generate death
\nNor tolerate pain<\/p>\n
The wailing sounds will no longer
\nBe
\nEchoing loudly in our salt sea
\nWe learned to love them
\nThey showed us how
\nTo embrace and to face up
\nTo what is the now<\/p>\n
