The great Red Ape
\natop a huge tall Durian Tree
\n80 feet above the forest floor
\nnimbly,clutching what for her
\nis one of her favourite fruits
\nit has such a luscious flavour which
\npermeates one’s roots
\nit gets into one’s system
\nwith an enticing taste
\nand a curtain of aroma
\necstatically embraced
\nholding onto one branch
\nwhilst grabbing this great shell
\nas spiky as a Porcupine
\nbut her powerful jaws
\nknow well
\nshe bites through the exterior
\ninto the cocooned flesh
\nand sucks out the creamy
\nsegments with so much true
\nrelish<\/p>\n
Fruit of all kinds are the
\nway
\nshe takes liquid supply
\nfiltered through these
\nmassive fruits
\nand thus she’s seldom dry
\nshe will drag leaves through
\nher lips and take her carb from
\nhere
\nand loves to crack the hardest
\nnuts
\na herbivore its clear
\nshe will eat insects
\nand eat eggs
\nbut is inclined to be
\nmuch more of a vegan
\nthan some it seems to me<\/p>\n
Her pregnancy is fairly long
\nClose to ours its true
\naround the 8 and 1\/2 months
\nand she’s a good mum too
\ngentle with her baby
\nwho has a lot to learn
\nup there in the canopy
\nclearly shows concern
\nits easy to fall that’s for sure
\nso mum must be on guard
\nand she is, she’ll remain stalwart
\nand work however hard
\nsuch love she gives her baby
\nand the wealth of knowledge she
\nhas experienced in her life time
\nat her school the canopy<\/p>\n
These great souls are so powerful
\nbut have problems as we know
\nlogging out their habitat
\nfor the Palm oil that they grow
\ntears the heart out, of a forest
\nand their larder of rich fruit
\nand puts stress on relationships
\nwhich are really at the root
\nof any Red Ape’s life
\ntheir genetic make up
\nmuch as ours
\nand they are very intelligent
\nwith lots of
\ninterpretive powers
\nthey identify as many
\nas 400 or so trees
\nthose which can’t be eaten
\nand those which always please<\/p>\n
Everyday they make their nest
\nand they sleep always on high
\nit seems precarious to observers
\nbut the great apes love the sky
\nup there in the canopy
\nthey are very safe, and they
\ncan see and hear the forest folk
\nas they go on their way
\nthey are very sensitive
\nand can pick up our flu
\nso we have to really
\nremember that and make sure
\nwe do not do
\nwhat some do that’s get close
\nto them
\nthat’s a very selfish thing
\nany form of sickness
\nkeep our distance
\nalways
\nwe do not want to bring
\nit anywhere near to them
\nfor what appears to be
\na simple cold or a touch of flu
\ncan kill them tragically<\/p>\n
The person of the forest
\nthat’s the Malay word, for
\nThe Orangutan a specialist
\nin forest life, for sure
\nbut now needs to be
\nhopeful that his cousins
\nthat is us
\nallow them to live where their born
\nwith the minimum of fuss
\nWhen you look into their wondrous eyes
\nsuch a depth of feeling shows
\nand the more you peer
\nthey just endear
\nthemselves, with a love
\nthat grows
\nso in many ways
\nit is hard to see
\nwhy the perils of today
\nhave become so very serious
\nand have led to the dismay
\nbut its there the habitat
\nis being sawn down
\nas we speak
\ngreat logs are lumbering
\nthrough the forest
\nas havoc some do wreak
\nagenda’s of the financial kind
\ncorrupt the hearts and mind
\nand the disparate thoughts
\nof the Corporates prove to
\nmany just how blind
\nthey are to the long term
\nprospects, and the balance that we see
\nit can all be torn to pieces
\nand create uncertainty
\nThose of us who appreciate
\nthe forests and the souls
\nwho live and die where they were born
\nmust hope now some controls
\nare put in place by Governments
\nto protect the countryside
\nand not destroy the canopy
