{"id":25886,"date":"2016-01-16T17:03:40","date_gmt":"2016-01-16T17:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cooksdelight.co.uk\/blog\/?p=25886"},"modified":"2016-01-16T17:08:49","modified_gmt":"2016-01-16T17:08:49","slug":"chukchi-a-daybin-our-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cooksdelight.co.uk\/blog\/2016\/01\/chukchi-a-daybin-our-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"The Chukchi a day in our lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Its a hard life<br \/>\nWhen you live closer to Nature<br \/>\nThe wild beasts have the option<br \/>\nAnd they try<br \/>\nTo eat what comes in Nature<br \/>\nTo eat within the seasons<br \/>\nThey don&#8217;t have supermarkets<br \/>\nAnd  can&#8217;t fly<\/p>\n<p>Whale hunting we know<br \/>\nPeople around the world<br \/>\nDo not like the idea that we do this<br \/>\nBut in this inhospitable place<br \/>\nWe have been hurled<br \/>\nNo trees at all grow here<br \/>\nSo not one apple<br \/>\nOur basic food is whale meat<br \/>\nAnd we try<br \/>\nTo share it nothing is wasted<br \/>\nIts our sustenance<br \/>\nWithout it we know<br \/>\nMost of us would die<\/p>\n<p>the IWC sets every year<br \/>\nOur quota<br \/>\n136 whales thats the price<br \/>\nWe are the indigenous<br \/>\nWe use harpoons and buoys<br \/>\n2 aluminium boats and spears<br \/>\nAnd its not one of our joys<\/p>\n<p>Getting the boats to sea<br \/>\nIs hard for they are heavy<br \/>\nThe sea is often rough<br \/>\nAnd what we do<br \/>\nIs stand up in  the boat<br \/>\nWhen we sight anything<br \/>\nToss our spear and make sure<br \/>\nIt is true<\/p>\n<p>Another may be thrown and perhaps another<br \/>\nThe buoys show us our progress<br \/>\nAnd just where<br \/>\nWe also have a rifle and will<br \/>\nShoot them<br \/>\nWe are sorry about all their despair<\/p>\n<p>We share the spoils with the sea birds<br \/>\nAnd the wild bears, the wild dogs<br \/>\nAnd the coyote seem to come<br \/>\nAnd then each family has whatever they<br \/>\nRequire<br \/>\nWe also eat it raw<br \/>\nBut we all eat some<\/p>\n<p>We stew it up and eat plates of it<br \/>\nIt does smell a bit<br \/>\nA sort of iodine smell<br \/>\nBut theN We are<br \/>\nForced to eat this protein<br \/>\nBecause it can be very cold<br \/>\nThe winds can blow<br \/>\nAnd our skin it just does scar<\/p>\n<p>This year its been much warmer<br \/>\nNo real blizzards yet we have felt<br \/>\nMinus 25 it can be thats when we are dealt<br \/>\nQuite a lot of punishment<br \/>\nWhen roofs can blow away<br \/>\nWe really are a hardy bunch<br \/>\nAnd some of us do pay<\/p>\n<p>The men who go out whaling<br \/>\nAre answerable of course<br \/>\nTo the unpredictable weather<br \/>\nSqualls of tremendous force<br \/>\nAnd sometimes the whales they fight back<br \/>\nThey are intelligent and strong<br \/>\nThey do not give in easily<br \/>\nFor the sea is where they belong<\/p>\n<p>We get back racked up with agony<br \/>\nOur joints and backs on fire<br \/>\nIt hard to put the gear away<br \/>\nLife can be really dire<br \/>\nBut then to see our children<br \/>\nIn the oil light glow<br \/>\nWith some whale stew in their tummies<br \/>\nThat is when we know<\/p>\n<p>Its good we have these animals<br \/>\nTo share along our shore<br \/>\nIts good we can take advantage<br \/>\nAnd never want for more<\/p>\n<p>If the westerners banned whaling<br \/>\nFor everyone we know<br \/>\nThat we would perish one by one<br \/>\nAnd our children couldn&#8217;t grow<br \/>\nSo we thank our gods and we thank the whales<br \/>\nFor its probable that we<br \/>\nCatch the older ones their sacrifice<br \/>\nThat each of us must be<\/p>\n<p>Grateful for these natural gifts<br \/>\nAnd respect all of the sea<br \/>\nCreatures  and wild animals<br \/>\nThat live around and be<br \/>\nNeeding us to share with them<br \/>\nWhat little we can find<br \/>\nYes we are whale hunters<br \/>\nThe chukchi, all of one mind<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Its a hard life When you live closer to Nature The wild beasts have the option And they try To eat what comes in Nature To eat within the seasons They don&#8217;t have supermarkets And can&#8217;t fly Whale hunting we &hellip;
