She looked like any other chicken really
\nBut for some reason she didn’t lay eggs now
\nThe farmer didn’t want her
\nthought she was a waste of time
\nReally she seemed useless anyhow<\/p>\n
Her physical condition wasn’t very good
\nHer feathers they were few and far between
\nWhen ever they de beaked her it was badly done
\nAnd one side of her face was deformed and lean<\/p>\n
It may have been from frost bite or an injury
\nOne thing for certain she was awfully shy
\nDidn’t like to be handled she really got upset
\nShe would flap her wings and more feathers would fly<\/p>\n
She seemed to gravitate towards the bedroom
\nI put a little camp bed there so she
\nCould lay down on a softish kind of blanket
\nOut of the draught where she preferred to be<\/p>\n
When I tried to pick her up, she was unhappy
\nClearly in her past something told me
\nshe’d been picked up rather painfully
\nAnd treated rather slovenly
\nAnd it would take some time for her to be<\/p>\n
Confident despite my empathy towards her
\nshe had been treated badly in the past
\nFor her to be so frightened everything just
\nTightened
\nShe just wanted to get away real fast<\/p>\n
To me, the factory must have been aggressive
\nThe cage she lived in must have been too small
\nThe workers must have beaten her
\nFor she was quite enlightened
\nBut never came to me when I did call<\/p>\n
Again I think too many had not been gentle
\nThey had frightened her and she was nervous too
\nShe used to sunbathe sometimes on a sunny day
\nClearly she had been in the dark, too few
\ndays spent in the light it seemed in fact to me
\nAnd one day rubbing her head with almond oil
\nShe seemed to really love it
\nGetting that attention
\nReally where she sat
\nShe seemed so loyal<\/p>\n
And so she nestled deeper
\nHead down eyes closed and she
\nWanted for a moment to just be here with me
\nBonding very beautifully she seemed to like why I
\nWas doing it to soften and give her a high<\/p>\n
There are Billions of these birds in the world
\nNow every year
\nAnd everyone is different an old soul
\nWho would fear
\nAny sound imaginable or the very raucous kind
\nEveryone is a chicken with an individuals mind<\/p>\n
keeping Sandye with me in the house taught me a lot
\nShe was very clean and confident and sat on the same spot
\nA creature of habit and comfort so to say
\nShe was a special friend to me in her sweet
\nchicken way<\/p>\n
When we cage souls inside batteries hour on hour
\nWe see
\nThem curl up and die inside of themselves
\nFor thats not where they should be<\/p>\n
We need to share our freedom
\nLet them walk about
\nLet them peck at this and that
\nAnd not be in any doubt<\/p>\n
Prove to them we love them
\nBe kind to them each day
\nLet them feel our honest love
\nAnd not be made to pay<\/p>\n
Not a single moment
\nShould their lives be put to pain
\nFor every single life thats lived
\nHas so much to gain<\/p>\n
From love from care from sharing
\nWhat is freely there
\nThe spirit and emotion
