Those idyllic green fields
\nThey must be somewhere
\nWhere the chickens come to roost
\nThe wide spaces they share
\nThis is the utopia paradise where they
\nWhere all the free rangers go
\nTheir free range eggs to lay<\/p>\n
If the door is opened
\nJust 5 minutes every day
\nThat is called free ranging
\nYea so much dismay
\nThe liars they are at it
\nBut economically
\nThey get away with murder
\nTheir freedom do not see<\/p>\n
Hardly any feathers left
\nPerhaps just one good leg
\nDe beaked and packed like sardines
\nThats a free range egg
\nThats the way they live their lives
\nOn a foot square piece of ground
\nWith a door thats opened for five minutes
\nI know it should astound<\/p>\n
All of us for being fooled
\nInto buying free range, they
\nAre much the same as any chicken
\nBeing farmed today
\nCruelty is everywhere
\nThe commercial world is crap
\nThe corporates are in it for the money
\nWhose the sap?<\/p>\n
The chicken
\nIs it the farmer
\nOr possibly is it you
\nThe chicken thought it was free range
\nAll that was overdue
\nIt was in a very cramped up staging
\nIt also couldn’t turn
\nAnd as for seeing a bright blue sky
\nThat something it had to learn<\/p>\n
It was inside almost all the time
\nTrodden on by the rest
\nNot fed enough clean water
\nAnd the food was far from the best
\nThe consumer well they paid a price
\nA lot more than those who
\nJust went and bought the battery hens
\nI know friends that is true<\/p>\n
But reality shows all of us
\nThe free range chicken seems
\nNot to get the life we imagined
\nNot the life from those chickens dreams
\nShe had to sit on a wire floor
\nBe de beaked and suffer too
\nFree ranging on gods green sweet earth
\nWas not the thing to do<\/p>\n
They are not what they were cracked up to be
\nThe economic game
\nWas played out by the producer
\nYou got it yea the same
\nGame as corporates play here
\nThat is what they claim<\/p>\n
The idyllic fields
\nThe wispy willow
\nThe beds of flowers and corn
\nWith myriad fowl a pecking
\nAs soon as they are born
\nUnder a blazing hot sun
\nWith not a hint of breeze
\nThe feathered army peck their way
\nUnderneath the trees<\/p>\n
For Just a moment in the sunlight
\nConstitutes a way
\nOf getting through the maze of cages
\nAway from judgement day
\nFighting with a rampant cock
\nWho might be at the door
\nReady to belt the life out of you
\nSomething you won’t ignore<\/p>\n
There are certain standards
\nBut its all to do with these
\nInspections whether or not they happen
\nAnd whether they pay their fees
\nTo get their registration
\nOr not it seems to me
\nFree range and or organic
\nIs how it ought to be<\/p>\n
But the same death comes to all of them
\nWho ever pays their dues
\nFree range battery caged up
\nIts all one great bug ruse<\/p>\n
It evokes a picturesque landscape
\nPerhaps a white stick fence
\nBlossoms growing everywhere
\nThis of course makes sense
\nBut reality paints a different story
\nA bare and ugly yard gravel thrown on top of it
\nThe odd wild dog on guard
\nOut there in the open for a few seconds they
\nSuffer yea they suffer in lots of real dismay<\/p>\n
A blade cuts through their poor old neck
\nAnd they drain out in a cone
\nSpluttering for all they are worth
\nNo they don’t die alone
\nHundreds die beside them all grades
