Pigs are so intelligent
\nSo clean and how they care
\nFor each other in their little lives
\nIt must be hard to bear<\/p>\n
The conditions in some farms
\nWhere restrictions are in force
\nThe gestation crates that maximise
\nThe profits and the source<\/p>\n
Of sows hard working mothers
\nwhere their movement is impaired
\nThey lay around for all that time
\nWhilst we believe we have cared<\/p>\n
They cannot turn around at all
\nThey are stuck there like a mass
\nThey have hearts and souls like you
\nOf course all this is crass<\/p>\n
Its evil for the farmers
\nTo take this course and go
\nDown the road to welfare standards
\nIf you want to know<\/p>\n
Driving costs down helps the farmer
\nWhere corporate a corporate policy
\nIs ripping percentages out of welfare
\nBut the public cannot see<\/p>\n
All they want is cheap food
\nFuck the pig who cares
\nAs long as the meat is tasty
\nNo one is splitting hairs<\/p>\n
Its man un kind in practice
\nMaybe he’s against the wall
\nCosts are rising daily
\nHe can easily fall<\/p>\n
But the animals he uses
\nAnd abuses every day
\nNeed care and need good welfare

Viva got a tip off
\nA red tractor farm it appears
\nWas keeping piglets in battery cages
\nWith The resultant tears<\/p>\n
Poured out of onlookers
\nIt was all above board so
\nThey got their various accolades
\nAnd their business it did grow<\/p>\n
Hiding behind inspections
\nThey arrogantly declared
\nOn their website
\nTruthfully nothing there was spared<\/p>\n
“The highest welfare standards”
\nAll happy and content
\n24 hour maternity care
\nWith many looking spent<\/p>\n
Piglets in wire cages
\nHow can that be right
\nSome had fallen through the gaps
\nAbandoned for the night<\/p>\n
The day in fact forever
\nHowever long that be
\nShivering on a concrete deck
\nFor anyone to see<\/p>\n
But nobody was looking
\nThey were left to rot
\nSome had died already
\nReady for the pot<\/p>\n
Imagine the frustration
\nOf a piglet in such stress
\nLonely and wailing quietly
\nAlone in its own mess<\/p>\n
Other pigs in the cages
\nApparently had been crushed
\nThey had died and still were laying there
\nAnything but flushed<\/p>\n
About the welfare standards
\nInspected seemingly
\nBy people with eyes somewhere else
\nThan where they ought to be<\/p>\n
Its hard to write these poems
\nAnd, not feel their pain
\nIts hard to get the fingers moving
\nIts really so much strain<\/p>\n
The public seem contented
\nWith not knowing and listening to
\nThe farmers proudly telling them
\nDon’t worry what we do<\/p>\n
Is love our little charges
\nTheir lives mean everything
\nWe push them into tiny cages
\nHow the hell can that bring<\/p>\n
8 piglets to euphoria
\nOnly the farmers know
\nAs they maximise their profits
\nAnd their bottom line does grow<\/p>\n
Its all about accounting
\nIts all about the way
\nThe minimum fucking standards
\nWhere you can get away<\/p>\n
With being on the bread line
\nWith markets at your ear
\nExpecting palatial standards
\nBut not around to hear<\/p>\n
The piglets screaming quietly
\nLying in their shit
\nPigs are never dirty
\nIts us we are unfit<\/p>\n
To really care for the animals
\nSo many farms fall down
\nThey are the way to profit
\nThough the voiceless they do drown<\/p>\n
If it were not for the likes of VIVA
\nAnd others on the prowl
\nEvery farm animal that is eaten
\nWould throw in the towel<\/p>\n
They suffer so much these days
\nIts profit all the way
\nIts fighting for cheap prices
\nAnd the animals always pay<\/p>\n
The tedium and ugliness
\nOf man un kind displayed
\nThe indifference they are uninspired
\nThats the great meat trade<\/p>\n
Where life is so unlovely
\nUnfashionable unsmart
\nHusbandry has gone down hill
\nNowadays theres no heart<\/p>\n
Left, no soul to speak of
\nIts a tasteless industry
\nIts vulgar and its tawdry
\nAs anyone can see<\/p>\n
Contemptible behaviour
\nAnd systems out of hell
\nI tremble as i write this stuff
\nFlinching as I tell<\/p>\n
Those of you who bother
\nTo read now what I write
\nThey are a band of heroes
\nGoing bonkers every night<\/p>\n
They bite the bars
\nThey live in shit
\nThey cry at night
\nThere in the pit<\/p>\n
Depravity is all around
\nBut they must never make a sound<\/p>\n
Just get on with what they get
\nHelp the farmer clear his debt<\/p>\n
Go to slaughter one by one
\nNever having seen the sun<\/p>\n
Felt its warm rays on their backs
\nKnowing sadly they are the facts<\/p>\n
Lost souls in a sea of doom
\nLeft in cages without room<\/p>\n
Sold to you who believes they were
\nTreated kindly it did not occur<\/p>\n
To the consumer, their lives were lost
\nAnd only they had felt the cost<\/p>\n
Man un kind and women too
\nWhat I have to say to you<\/p>\n
Is living souls who become your food
\nYou are truly being crude<\/p>\n
Pigs are intelligent and don’t forget
\nDo not make them someones debt<\/p>\n
Love them care for them keep them clean
\nDon’t make them feel like a machine<\/p>\n
Poplar farm Humberside little red tractor scheme
\nSupplying pork to Morrisons
\nStill using gestation crates
\nAllowed by law but not by those with hearts and souls
\nAnd piglets kept in battery crates stacked 3 high
\nThis maximising profit at the expense of the baby pigs
\nnow under investigation from all sides
\nBut proclaiming their innocence<\/p>\n
