It looms from out of Mother Earth
\nRocks of basalt climb
\nInto the barrier of spears
\nIt traverses all time
\ndark and dangerous mountains
\nFor a thousand miles or more
\nSandstone valleys cloaked
\nIn green
\nDizzying heights explore<\/p>\n
For 160 million years
\nEroded by the time
\nEland come in the fragile herds
\nUp the mountain slopes they climb
\nThis is instinctive knowledge
\nWorn paths in the rock
\nHigher and higher to the summer grass
\nGradually they flock<\/p>\n
All the while packs of Baboons
\nBoth intelligent and kind
\nDo very well on the rugged slopes
\nWith their particularly clever mind
\nThey can work out ways of finding foods
\nThey can dig up tubers they
\nManage their lives on this mountain
\nIn a truly perfect way<\/p>\n
Overhead the vultures fly
\nThrough the thermals in the sky
\nAlongside jackals they are there
\nThe carnivores not born to share
\nThe eland are A perfect breed
\nThey have the knowledge yes indeed
\nThey follow the watercourses they
\nRich higher ground where the sweet grass lay<\/p>\n
The higher they go the colder they feel
\nThats when the winds blow and soon reveal
\nShocking storms and pouring rain
\nAnd nutrients washed away again
\nSo higher and higher tHey wander on
\nUp the the top where nothing is gone
\nWhere fresh rich grasses still do grow
\nWhere electric storms rage too and fro
\nLightening strikes are everywhere
\nFire lifts flames into the air
\nRaging down the mountainside
\nSwallowing fauna in its stride<\/p>\n
There are rivers flowing and gorges high
\nWaterfalls fall from the sky
\nMasses of rainbow mists do form
\nAs the water sprays become the norm
\nEvery creature has its place
\nMore so than the human race
\nIts all laid out from history
\nAnd every soul is wild and free<\/p>\n
ice rats they exist up there
\nBut actually not anywhere
\nElse the only place they be
\nIs on the Drakenberg and we
\nKnow the Servils think they taste
\nPretty good though hunt with haste
\nThe environment is a hostile world
\nWith weather changes huge storms hurled
\nFull of ice and full of snow
\nIt really isn’t a place to go<\/p>\n
But the Eland they are a tough old bunch
\nAnd they can wander and face the crunch
\nOf ice and cold and sun and rain
\nAnd every year come back again
\nIts an unbelievable uphill climb
\nAnd they all do it time after time
\nSome fall by the wayside they
\nWill be scooped up by the vultures
\nWho play
\nUp in the heavens with peering eyes
\nTo pounce and consume out of the skies<\/p>\n
They bounce about their large curved beaks
\nWet with blood feathered freaks
\nThey can bite through bone for the marrow and
\nDigest the bone we must understand
\nIn this hostile world these are perfect souls
\nMean’t to be there in their roles
\nnature holds a perfect plan
\nWhich is unknown by the likes of man<\/p>\n
When they get to the top where the grass is green
\nThey must make the descent for the summit scene
\nIs very unstable and soon the snow
\nComes washing down when they must go
\nTheir stamina and mobility
\nThe Elands truly wild and free
\nKnow the ropes and togetherness
\nAnd Nature is on hand to bless<\/p>\n
They walk together and gradually
\nGet back down where the air is free
\nAnd the grass is once again so sweet
\nJust in time for them to eat
\nSo the wheel of the year turns around
\nTheir calves are robust
\nThey can stand their ground
\nThe grand old dragon quietly lays
\nAcross the land in its basalt haze
