{"id":23688,"date":"2015-10-04T18:24:21","date_gmt":"2015-10-04T18:24:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cooksdelight.co.uk\/blog\/?p=23688"},"modified":"2015-10-04T18:32:36","modified_gmt":"2015-10-04T18:32:36","slug":"drakenberg-and-the-animals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cooksdelight.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/10\/drakenberg-and-the-animals\/","title":{"rendered":"Drakenberg and the animals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It looms from out of Mother Earth<br \/>\nRocks of basalt climb<br \/>\nInto the barrier of spears<br \/>\nIt traverses all time<br \/>\ndark and dangerous mountains<br \/>\nFor a thousand miles or more<br \/>\nSandstone valleys cloaked<br \/>\nIn green<br \/>\nDizzying heights explore<\/p>\n<p>For 160 million years<br \/>\nEroded by the time<br \/>\nEland come in the fragile herds<br \/>\nUp the mountain slopes they climb<br \/>\nThis is instinctive knowledge<br \/>\nWorn paths in the rock<br \/>\nHigher and higher to the summer grass<br \/>\nGradually they flock<\/p>\n<p>All the while packs of Baboons<br \/>\nBoth intelligent and kind<br \/>\nDo very well on the rugged slopes<br \/>\nWith their particularly clever mind<br \/>\nThey can work out ways of finding foods<br \/>\nThey can dig up tubers they<br \/>\nManage their lives on this mountain<br \/>\nIn a truly perfect way<\/p>\n<p>Overhead the vultures fly<br \/>\nThrough the thermals in the sky<br \/>\nAlongside jackals they are there<br \/>\nThe carnivores not born to share<br \/>\nThe eland are A perfect breed<br \/>\nThey have the knowledge yes indeed<br \/>\nThey follow the watercourses they<br \/>\nRich higher ground where the sweet grass lay<\/p>\n<p>The higher they go the colder they feel<br \/>\nThats when the winds blow and soon reveal<br \/>\nShocking  storms and  pouring rain<br \/>\nAnd nutrients washed away again<br \/>\nSo higher and higher tHey wander on<br \/>\nUp the the top where nothing is gone<br \/>\nWhere fresh rich grasses still do grow<br \/>\nWhere electric storms rage too and fro<br \/>\nLightening strikes are everywhere<br \/>\nFire lifts flames into the air<br \/>\nRaging down the mountainside<br \/>\nSwallowing fauna in its stride<\/p>\n<p>There are rivers flowing and gorges high<br \/>\nWaterfalls fall from the sky<br \/>\nMasses of rainbow mists do form<br \/>\nAs the water sprays become the norm<br \/>\nEvery creature has its place<br \/>\nMore so than the human race<br \/>\nIts all laid out from history<br \/>\nAnd every soul is wild and free<\/p>\n<p>ice rats they exist up there<br \/>\nBut actually not anywhere<br \/>\nElse the only place they be<br \/>\nIs on the Drakenberg and we<br \/>\nKnow the Servils think they taste<br \/>\nPretty good though hunt with haste<br \/>\nThe environment is a hostile world<br \/>\nWith weather changes huge storms hurled<br \/>\nFull of ice and full of snow<br \/>\nIt really isn&#8217;t a place to go<\/p>\n<p>But the Eland they are  a tough old bunch<br \/>\nAnd they can wander and face the crunch<br \/>\nOf ice and cold and sun and rain<br \/>\nAnd every year come back again<br \/>\nIts an unbelievable uphill climb<br \/>\nAnd they all do it time after time<br \/>\nSome fall by the wayside they<br \/>\nWill be scooped up by the vultures<br \/>\nWho play<br \/>\nUp in the heavens with peering eyes<br \/>\nTo pounce and consume out of the skies<\/p>\n<p>They bounce about their large curved beaks<br \/>\nWet with blood feathered freaks<br \/>\nThey can bite through bone for the marrow and<br \/>\nDigest the bone we must understand<br \/>\nIn this hostile world these are perfect souls<br \/>\nMean&#8217;t to be there in their roles<br \/>\nnature holds a perfect plan<br \/>\nWhich is unknown by the likes of man<\/p>\n<p>When they get to the top where the grass is green<br \/>\nThey must make the descent for the summit scene<br \/>\nIs very unstable and soon the snow<br \/>\nComes washing down when they must go<br \/>\nTheir stamina and mobility<br \/>\nThe Elands truly wild and free<br \/>\nKnow the ropes and togetherness<br \/>\nAnd Nature is on hand to bless<\/p>\n<p>They walk together and gradually<br \/>\nGet back down where the air is free<br \/>\nAnd the grass is once again so sweet<br \/>\nJust in time for them to eat<br \/>\nSo the wheel of the year turns around<br \/>\nTheir calves are robust<br \/>\nThey can stand their ground<br \/>\nThe grand old dragon quietly lays<br \/>\nAcross the land in its basalt haze<br \/>\nA mythical picture of high esteem<br \/>\nClearly Africa&#8217;s certain dream<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It looms from out of Mother Earth Rocks of basalt climb Into the barrier of spears It traverses all time dark and dangerous mountains For a thousand miles or more Sandstone valleys cloaked In green Dizzying heights explore For 160 &hellip;
