Tonight as the autumnal curtains were drawn
\nA seasonal wind drew its wrath
\nGusty and squally and blusterous
\nWell what felt like frost in its path
\nThe darkness swept in with such fury
\nSeptember was rushing us by
\nI left all the towels and the blankets
\nAt the dog rescue centre on high<\/p>\n
The road down to Halton is winding
\nLike a corkscrew its twists and its turns
\nMy headlights picked out all the ghouls and the ghosties
\nAnd certain wild eyes which concerns
\nMe, for as close to the road clearly they
\nGet one must take care to see
\nBut the wind was just rushing about every which way
\nPushing and prodding each tree<\/p>\n
Noticeably colder a wood of such worth
\nPulling its strength for deep in the earth
\nLush overgrown shadows everywhere
\nDendritic dangers the wild ones could share
\nNobody following all seemed so still
\nOnto the bypass through berko
\nThe spill
\nof the leaves of the darkness
\na stillness of choice
\nThe light had been sucked from the moment
\nAll I could hear was my voice<\/p>\n
Murmuring softly above traffic noise
\nThe dazzle of light forms beyond
\nThe headlights cut pathways into the night
\nIts the time of the evening I am fond
\nAs light almost vacates the prism
\nAnd the curtains of night are so drawn
\nThat amazing sky scape over the hills
\nReminding me when I was born<\/p>\n
Away far away in the south of this land
\nIn an old suburb fast away
\nWith bombs raging down with sirens that drown
\nOut the cold comfort a way
\nOff in the distance the doodle bug sounds
\nThe fire engines ringing the cordite they say
\nSmoke almost everywhere bangs in my ears
\nFlashbacks to something that drew from me tears<\/p>\n
The dogs would be settled back up on their hill
\nIn the warmth of their beds far from the chill
\nDreaming their dreams no doubt glad to be there
\nReliving the stories all those dreams they share
\nWith each other all hearing the wind in the trees
\nTheir tummies full now may they seize
\nTheir time to remember their lives
