Whether we are unenlightened
\nOr our knowledge was curtailed
\nWe probably were guilty
\nAnd feel now that we failed
\nThe ivory we once bought
\nThe leather we once wore
\nPerhaps we were malicious
\nPerhaps we did ignore
\nThe obvious its possible
\nBut unlikely for then we
\nThought more of celebration
\nThan where the ivory<\/p>\n
Came from or the leather
\nTake the ivory
\nThere are people in China
\nWho really didn’t see
\nan elephant ever
\nAnd if they had
\nThey certainly would refuse
\nTo buy a product made from
\nSuch a creature
\nSo awareness means we never would
\nabuse<\/p>\n
Leather did we know what it was really
\nDid we realise a cow must die
\nBreaking up a family and destroying a life
\nFor another pair of shoes
\nWas that some lie<\/p>\n
Then one day we realised our error
\nThe terror of it surfaced in our soul
\nWe took those tragic pieces to a tranquil place
\nAnd buried them trying to console
\nOurselves for ignorance was then the culprit
\nAnd why were we so ignorant pray tell
\nThe majority of people know and choose to
\nContinue down the path
\nBut you my dear you realised you’d fell<\/p>\n
Foul of those sweet animals and made amends
\nYou would not ever harm those souls again
\nThose soulful things you buried in your garden
\nAnd in your heart you feel their lasting pain
\nEnlightenment is the measure of our freedom
\nWe must not beat ourselves up now ere again
\nAll we can do is live our lives more lightly
\nAnd realise each earthling has great worth
\nAnd enlighten others to the abject cruelty
