A corporate as massive as Costco ought to be
\nTrading on its promises and nobody should see
\nA producer doing the opposite and ethics in the frame
\nHillandale somehow does fail that’s what some do claim<\/p>\n
Nearby eggs is a message and the picture it displays
\nIs chickens roaming in green pastures which well kind of says
\nFreedom they have freedom and confinement is not the thing
\nBut reality tells us a different story so today I bring<\/p>\n
Some truth into the equation cage free they are not
\nIn fact the cages are real small in hell they have got
\nThe worst kind of conditions locked in cages right
\nLiving on each other in artificial light<\/p>\n
Not a hint of sunshine and certainly no fresh air
\nClearly no inspection for the dead birds that are there
\nAre left to rot and mummify and on those pancakes they
\nLay their eggs and live in fact every single day<\/p>\n
What can be more hellish than living on corpses we
\nCan not even imagine the nightmare these birds see
\nEating sleeping shitting and laying eggs as well
\nOn top of all this vileness this is indeed true Hell<\/p>\n
the hens their wings get broken the pain of that please try
\nTheir necks get caught in the wire alas and sadly then they die
\nNobody comes to release them so they mummify and rot
\nThis is battery cage production right there on the spot<\/p>\n
And Costco has said they are phasing out cages
\nAnd 10 years has passed since they have said this
\nA lot of real sad tears
\nHave fallen from the many eyes
\nAll females in distress
\nAnd still they chickens are in cage living in this mess<\/p>\n
And no timeline and no transition
\nIt just goes on and on
\nTo me and others actually it feels like quite a con
\nWhilst the packaging is clear it shows
\nA meadow nice and green
\nWhere happy chickens pass their days
\nBut instead it’s quite obscene<\/p>\n
For me there is some abhorrence
\nIt’s disgusting that these birds
\nAre given such a horrid life
\nBut the marketing words<\/p>\n
Are apparently dishonest
\nFor this is real abuse
\nI haven’t got the stomach
\nTo understand this ruse<\/p>\n
The chickens are supplying the eggs
\nFor us to eat
\nAnd coming from such squalor
\nAnd impurity to greet<\/p>\n
Consumers who are believing
\nAnother story here
\nIt’s lamentable behaviour
\nCreating quite some fear<\/p>\n
On less space than one iPad
\nThese poor birds live their life
\nFood safety must be in the reckoning
\nAlong with all this strife<\/p>\n
Salmonella must be around
\nIn what is the standard fair
\nCrushed and dying chickens
\nAre really everywhere<\/p>\n
Yoke trails clearly running
\nFly infested too
\nWho would ever buy these eggs
\nKnowing this is true<\/p>\n
It’s really quite beyond the pale
\nTo make chickens suffer so
\nAnd to lie about it to customers
\nWho think of course they know<\/p>\n
Suffering is costly
\nThe discomfort of it all
\nSuch melancholy and sadness
\nThey can just about crawl<\/p>\n
They cannot glad their wings though
\nAnd their poor feet how they bleed
\nThe anxiety of living
\nAnd of trying to succeed<\/p>\n
It’s galling and it’s mortifying
\nTo see great banks of birds
\nIn cages tightly packed
\nReally I am lost for words<\/p>\n
The smell is unbelievable
\nAmmonia fills the air
\nThe nostrils seek fulfilment
\nFrom breathing some fresh air<\/p>\n
Have some remorse for those sweet birds
\nWho clearly must desire
\nA field in which to wander in
\nSo show to light their fire<\/p>\n
To retrace their instinctive pleasure
\nTo remember how it was
\nAnd to be so disillusioned
\nReally just because<\/p>\n
Life is so pathetic
\nSo tear jerking so sick
\nThe total insipidity
\nThe truly gruesome slick<\/p>\n
Of urine and of feathers
\nAnd everything else besides
\nThe mutilated corpses
\nThat now nobody hides<\/p>\n
It’s spitefulness and viciousness
\nIt’s rancour through and through
\nHumanities depravity
\nJust pitiless we do<\/p>\n
Carry on rewarding the chickens
\nIn this way
\nEvery sort of atrocity
\nThat could be brought in play<\/p>\n
And no respect for their offering
\nThe eggs that we all buy
\nDespite the misfeasance going on
\nStill we do apply<\/p>\n
Ourselves to so support it
\nFor we do believe it’s right
\nThings are a whole lot better
\nSuppliers have seen the light<\/p>\n
They have pledged they are doing something
\nWe believe that so
\nwe go and buy them regularly
\nThe boxes do they show<\/p>\n
We ought to have the confidence
\nWe expect to anyway
\nAnd it’s shocks us all to discover
\nThat the chickens still all pay<\/p>\n
There is no respect for life
\nJust desecration there
\nNeglectful and Unregarded
\nIn unflattering despair<\/p>\n
Thank goodness that I am vegan
\nFor it gives me some esteem
\nI can honour every living soul
\nFor there is nothing to redeem<\/p>\n
My wish is that these corporations
\nKnuckle down and try
\nThey have the bloody where for all
\nAnd the question we ask why<\/p>\n
They cannot bring themselves to honour
\nTheir public and to be
\nHonest and less abusive
\nTo the animals to free<\/p>\n
All of them from sanctions
\nFrom the prisons that they made
\nGive them back some dignity
