The History of the Rape is not a long one
\nGrowers were told that they could earn a crust
\nBy grubbing up their old an ancient fruit trees
\nAnd replacing them with Rape which was a must
\nThat made me kind of sigh for that mean’t apples

\nAnd we would have the supermarket varieties
\nFor at that point was all we could afford.<\/p>\n
Subsidies were handed out to growers
\nTo lay in fields of Rape and they would be
\nRewarded by good yields and better margins
\nAnd that would stop them struggling instantly
\nFor the supermarkets went abroad for apples
\nfor juices no love lost for orchards here
\nFor very little difference they would bugger off
\nSaying that home produce was too dear<\/p>\n
Only pennies in it but no matter
\nHard and fast they skipped it off to Spain
\nAnd left our growers wrestling with their mortgages
\nThe weather, and the taxes and the pain
\nSo Rape was introduced two kinds the oil seed
\nAnd the other more Industrial kind of Rape
\nBoth yield fields of floral yellow character
\nAnd the growers kind of got a clean escape<\/p>\n
The fact that it kills Hares and other wild life
\nWith its obnoxious heady kind of smell
\nwith Erucic acid prevalent
\nAnd clearly many now content
\nTo take it up and run with it and pay
\nGM crazed Monsanto has cleared their desk
\nAnd most organic souls ave gone away
\nAnd we in Britain scratch around
\nFor an organic apple
\nThere’s a few but not as many as before
\nOnce upon a time there were 200
\nBut now well I’m not exactly sure
\nA plethora of blossom the wonder of bouquets
\nBut that is where we’ve got to
\nWe’ve entered a malaise
\nIts the hyper and the super
\nWho make a pile of dough
\nAnd the poor old British Growers
\nWell no one wants to know.<\/p>\n
What we want can never get a look in
\nWe’re deleted from the equation in a trice
\nIt what they want to do that really matters
\nTo say we all gave up well isn’t nice
\nBut what we did was hand the trade to others
\nLet them take advantage of our soul
\nAnd that’s how Rape has been able to dominate
\nAnd in a nutshell take over control.<\/p>\n
If you ever fly and land at Heathrow Airport
\nThese golden plots stick out like a sore thumb
\nThe ignorant think its mustard
\nMost say, it does look pretty
\nAs for me and a few more, I go numb
\nKnowing it, is of a because hefty subsidy
\nNo pay out and no rape you can be sure

\nPears and Cherries, Plums and Berries

\nit seems to me
\ntasteless all the same sized shiny wonders
\nThat wrinkle and go soft immediately
\nRape has spread like wildfire in a forest
\nAnd huge great scapes you find them everywhere
\nWe’ve lost a lot of fruit trees that were dear to us
