Ellesmere Island the tenth biggest
\nIsland in the world
\nFar up near the North Pole
\nAnd I have just been hurled
\nUp here with my cameras
\nMy tent and beating heart
\nTo get close to some wild wolves
\nAnd I am just about to start<\/p>\n
That sky scape is peach pink
\nThe horizon flaming red
\nThe mountains with their ice kissed summits
\nThe wilderness has led
\nMe to see close up the wild
\nWolves the slopes are formidable
\nI do feel like a child<\/p>\n
Sent into the perilous wastes
\nAn electric fence and more
\nA certain trepidation
\nThat I, dare not ignore
\nA symmetry of harmony
\nOn the edge of somewhere far
\nAnd a pack of truly wild boys
\nWho just follow their star<\/p>\n
Here I am alone up here
\nWhere these wolves have never seen
\nAny human being before
\nAnd they are lean
\nInquisitive and edgy
\nBut as cautious probably
\nAs I am so unknowing
\nOf exactly where they be<\/p>\n
The temperature can fall away
\nTo minus 50
\nAnd that’s cold
\n4 months of night imagine that
\nNo light no sun nothing to hold
\nOnto really just the thought
\n16 weeks of the blackest woe
\nEveryday they need to catch
\nThey need some heat you know<\/p>\n
There are great massive
\nPrehistoric looking musk ox
\nGladiatorial fighters
\nWith massive heads like rocks
\nWhen they charge 400 kilo’s
\nColliding at full force
\nLike a clap of thunder
\nThese bulls are so on course<\/p>\n
The pack need all this strength and power
\nThey need the flesh to keep
\nThem strong to add the muscle
\nIn their den the pups now creep
\nlunar she’s the mother
\nThe carer she must see
\nHer babies get the kind of food
\nThey need and constantly<\/p>\n
Howling communication
\nIs heard some 10 long miles
\nA choir who sing in harmony
\nThey recognise the trials
\nAnd the small transgressions
\nThe honour and the fight
\nAnguish and adversity
\nAnd just when to take flight<\/p>\n
Romulus is the apex male
\nThe daddy of the pack
\n2 playful yearlings
\nPositioned often at the back
\n1000 square mile hunting places
\nHunting twice a day
\nNeeding to protect the pups
\nOr else of course they pay<\/p>\n
Buchanan’s wolves are in the spotlight
\nhares they gallop well
\nScruffy is one of the youths
\nWhose curious to tell
\nTo get in close and chew the cameras
\nAnd steal a stool and run
\nTry to disengage the fence
\nSuch courage in the sun<\/p>\n
The pups showed up on camera
\nThey came out of the den
\n3 of them no fear at all
\nNothing there and then
\nThere they were such big black eyes
\nStaring out at me
\nRight into the cameras lens
\nWhere they had to be<\/p>\n
Born deaf and blind these little souls
\nBut seemingly it feels
\nThat the pack has kind of adopted me
\nWhich of course appeals<\/p>\n
6 hour hunting sessions
\nAppear to be the plan
\nLife is getting harder
\nEven one lone man
\nHas got to grips with caring
\nAnd sharing this bold pack
\nI am leaving for a little while
\nBut In 6 weeks I will come back<\/p>\n
The 3 pups I called Banjo
\nLola and sweet meg
\nShe was the runt alas for her
\nSkinny in the leg
\nThey had caught a Musk Ox
\nAnd were finishing off the meat
\nIt’s all about decisions
\nBad ones can unseat<\/p>\n
It’s all about the instinct
\nAnd the knowledge they have accrued
\nIt’s all about good judgement
\nThe family does exude
\nConfidence and togetherness
\nAnd guile and adversity
\nThe bonding and the character
\nAnd the strength and temerity<\/p>\n
The threadbare warrior oxen
\nLive on meagre diets they
\nGo into crashing combat
\nThat charges up their day
\nIt’s all about the hunt for them
\nAcross the marbled sky
\nThe skewers and the falcon
\nVie for mortals from on high<\/p>\n
The wolves are so formidable
\nTheir attitude is good
\nThey are family orientated
\nAs families really should
\nThey all go much much further
\nInto the mountains they
\nNeed to eat just anything
\nAnything each day<\/p>\n
Meg is gone now apparently
\nThe pack they may have found
\nThemselves close to another pack
\nAnd couldn’t go to ground
\nFast enough and Meg was lost
\nShe was weak anyway
\nAnd the wild ones have to all be strong
\nAnd eat something every day<\/p>\n
Buchanon is a gentle man
\nAnd you could feel his pain
\nThe fact that Meg had bought it
\nA link in his chain
\nApparently was broken
\nYou could feel the solace he
\nExperienced in that moment
\nAnd you felt that instantly<\/p>\n
The wilderness is no place for the weak
\nThat message hung
\nFrom the peach sky
\nFrom the running wolves
\nThe heroes seemed unsung
\nThey Symbolise the wild boys
\nThe family and the lengths
\nThey go to to remain together
\nWhich are the wolves true strengths<\/p>\n
Finally a selfie
\nSadness and a feeling
\nThat I had got close to them all
\nWhich had been so revealing
\nA gentle man with a camera
\nCompared to those
\n with a gun
