The fennel grown this season
\nLeapt into the air
\nFilled with scents and flavour
\nFor all it’s world to share
\nIt enjoyed the foxgloves
\nGood bedfellows we saw
\nEach providing comfort
\nOf that we did feel sure<\/p>\n
Our ancestors loved fennel
\nFor its aromatic fruits
\nThe Romans grew with dignity
\nAnd loved its tender shoots
\nIt helped their eyes see further
\nChopped in salads does
\nSweeten, it’s desirable
\nAnd gives a sandwich buzz<\/p>\n
The stomach is eased gently
\nIt’s ruler is Mars
\nIt gives us all protection
\nDirectly from the stars
\nIn a herbal composition
\nIt prefers to be away
\nPerhaps with the great foxglove
\nTo dance the night away<\/p>\n
Green and into golden
\nIt wears it’s subtle hue
\nA mesh of golden seed pods
\nSo it’s worth saving a few
\nShake them in November
\nInto a dry tin
\nAnd wait until Jack Frost has left
