{"id":18402,"date":"2014-10-22T21:56:24","date_gmt":"2014-10-22T21:56:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cooksdelight.co.uk\/blog\/?p=18402"},"modified":"2014-10-22T21:56:24","modified_gmt":"2014-10-22T21:56:24","slug":"rat-hole-miners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cooksdelight.co.uk\/blog\/2014\/10\/rat-hole-miners\/","title":{"rendered":"Rat hole miners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the north of India<br \/>\nWithin the Jaintia hills<br \/>\nMany a rat hole mine is found<br \/>\nA labyrinth of chills<br \/>\nMini coal mines<br \/>\nReached by foot and crawled into each day<br \/>\nChildren from the age of 10<br \/>\nWorking now for pay<\/p>\n<p>Terrible conditions<br \/>\nRocky outcrops where<br \/>\nCoal is dug and cut deep down<br \/>\nAnd carted out each day<br \/>\nThey come in from Nepal<br \/>\nAnd Bangladesh to find<br \/>\nA pittance in conditions<br \/>\nThat kind of blow your mind<\/p>\n<p>Slaves would turn around and go<br \/>\nBut these children do their thing<br \/>\nEverything is against the law<br \/>\nBut the law just doesn&#8217;t bring<br \/>\nAnything to bear on these mine owners<br \/>\nNot at all<br \/>\nThe migrants earn enough to eat<br \/>\nWith their backs against the wall<\/p>\n<p>The dust is clearly filthy<br \/>\nThe dangers down there stark<br \/>\nSlippery and little air<br \/>\nUntrained and in the dark<br \/>\nHit by wire and rocks can fall<br \/>\nChildren do get bashed<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s very very narrow<br \/>\nThese children have been trashed<\/p>\n<p>Waking up a pale blue sky<br \/>\nA golden sun does rise<br \/>\nThey climb out of their hovels<br \/>\nRagged they realise<br \/>\nNo water not to speak of<br \/>\nNo doctors none at all<br \/>\nIt is all unregulated<br \/>\nNobody on call<\/p>\n<p>No schools no choice<br \/>\nNo life<br \/>\nChild miners live in squalor<br \/>\nAnd share the awful strife<\/p>\n<p>Impulse is a group of souls<br \/>\nTrying hard to see<br \/>\nMigrant children taken back<br \/>\nTo school and it can be<br \/>\nTwo young boys<br \/>\nWe watched them sent back to Nepal<br \/>\nTo go to school to train<br \/>\nAt least they didn&#8217;t work the mines<br \/>\nNo never again<\/p>\n<p>India is knowing but chooses to look away<br \/>\nMany of the mines are owned by government servants<br \/>\nSo they say<br \/>\nThere is so much corruption<br \/>\nPeople on the make<br \/>\nProfiting from meagre wages<br \/>\nAll of them on the take<\/p>\n<p>Children working all hours<br \/>\nIn these satanic halls<br \/>\nBlack with dust as needs must<br \/>\nWith walls and walls and walls<br \/>\nOf coal the black gold thrust<br \/>\nInto your face all of your days<br \/>\nChoking through your lungs<br \/>\nAnd creating the malaise<\/p>\n<p>One has to think of children<br \/>\nThe foundation stones of life<br \/>\nWorking in this evil place<br \/>\nJam packed full on strife<br \/>\nThe government are earning<br \/>\nFrom slaves and many die<br \/>\nThey fall from a great height<br \/>\nAnd forever lie<\/p>\n<p>No one cares to find them<br \/>\nThats the way it is<br \/>\nHorror it&#8217;s so awful<br \/>\nSeeing it makes me cry<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the north of India Within the Jaintia hills Many a rat hole mine is found A labyrinth of chills Mini coal mines Reached by foot and crawled into each day Children from the age of 10 Working now for &hellip;
