Mysteriously
\na mildly mannered mouse
\nmanaged to run
\nacross the road in front of us
\nthe lights just didn’t stun
\nhe ran like the clappers
\nhis little legs on fire
\ngoing somewhere in a hurry
\nclearly a live wire
\nHe had his brand new suit on
\nMohair let us say
\nlooking very dapper
\nin a kind of mousy way
\nclearly he was off to see
\na really special date
\nand clearly taking chances
\nperhaps he was running late
\nhoping to see his “minnie”
\ndown some dark hole somewhere
\nlets hope he made it safely
\nbecause he seemed to care
\nnot far down the path we saw
\na fox his bushy tail
\nhis flash of red upon us
\nthough his eyes looked very pale
\nhe turned round in a thicket
\nhead down and he was gone
\npicked out in the headlights
\nas if the moon had shone
\nonwards towards Gaddesden
\non the Aldbury road
\na gang of doe’s
\ndid tentatively show their heels
\none knows
\nwhen Deers are on the razzle
\nhoping to have fun
\nclad in winter wonderland
\nenjoying a run
\nthe sights and sounds
\nof Ashridge
\na forest near to where
\nwe live a heavenly underworld
\nwhere earthlings are aware
\nof all the cars a coming
\nof all the lorries too
\ntrundling through their sacred space
\nas humanity can do
\nthe darkness closes pictures
\nwe might see in the day
\nbut night time in the forest
\nis magical and may
\nopen your eyes to wonders
\nthe wild folk how they share
\nthe myriad of trees and bushes
\nthey know each one that’s there
\nbecause we live in concrete boxes
\noften we forget
\nthe wild ones live outside all year
\nin their warrens in their sett
\nin their earth’s and in their nests may be
\nclearly they are wise
\nfor freedom is the key word here
