13 years old a mother horse
\nworking her butt oh well of course
\nwhen your a Percheron
\nthat’s what you do
\nyou are work horse
\nsome Arabian too
\nin the streets of New Hope
\nthis a touristy town
\nclearly a carriage tour
\nreally goes down
\nwell with the people
\nand “Bell” did the tour
\nshe was a tall horse
\nand clearly was sure
\nfooted and strong
\non these busy streets
\nwhere
\nbikers and theatre goers
\ndid share
\non the Delaware river
\nso lots there to see
\ngoing up Mechanic Street
\nshe fell and died instantly
\nit may have been a seizure
\nwho knows but I’m sure
\nanimals working like this
\nget a raw
\ndeal its incessant
\nand heavy work too
\nand Bell clearly gave up
\nwhat else could she do
\ncould we communicate
\nhow could she say
\nshe wasn’t up to it
\non that Friday
\nher daughter Betty
\nwill pine for her she
\nwill now get the jobs
\nwe shall just wait and see
\nPercherons can live to 30
\nI hear
\nbut working the streets
\nits obviously clear
\nits stressful and heavy work
\nand it seems to me
\nworking these creatures
\nis unnecessary
\nwe now have engines
\nwhy make a horse slave
\nin amongst all this stress
\nwhich in “Bell”s case was grave
\na very sad passing
\nbut what do they do
\nwork till they drop
