Mutilation isn’t pretty
\nits sordid and its wrong
\nbecause the voiceless cannot scream
\nthey suffer all along
\nhere we see a turtle
\nlifting its head in grief
\nits body mutilated
\nits pain beyond belief
\nso because it is a reptile
\nits thought to have no pain
\nlook into its eyes my friends
\nlook at its deep strain
\nits hopes are clearly evident
\nas we witness its agony
\nand all around it
\nwhat is it now the world can see
\nits eggs its fleshy organs
\nand blood and extended gore
\nthis is a living breathing soul
\non display no more
\nshould creature suffer
\nthe sinful vile display
\nof having its organs bared alive
\nits extraordinary to pay
\nso high a price for life on earth
\nthe evilness of man
\nits really hard to contain myself
\nwhy there’s no all out ban
\nwhy there is no inspection
\nwhy we do what we do
\nand let a creature suffer so
\nthe hatred that it drew
\nout of me and I am just
\na poet looking on
\nlook at those eyes
\nthat sick surprise
\nuntil of course it was gone
\nonto a higher plain somewhere
\nto think about the way
\nthose Chinese grocers dispatched it
\nand the price it had to pay<\/p>\n
I rest my heart a moment
\nits hard to witness this
\na supermarket in California
\nand so so many miss
\nthe brutality of retail
\nthe evil that is there
\nthe agony of that departing soul
