60 years

Such inventiveness
And imagery
Suspicious and resourceful
The chimpanzee
So complex
Prophetic and far sighted
They stare beyond you
And those eyes
are like
lagoons From long ago attracting light
And shade so mindful
That is when you realise

In all of those long sixty years
Such bafflement through expectation
Every gesture in the book
Pre supposing tantamount
Unmistakable interpretation
Teaching chimpanzee’s to count
Half expecting gibberish
An initiate in every way
They shrug their shoulders
Whose is teaching who?
And whose the student of the day
Histrionics and overacting
Magnify the joy you feel
talking to the chimpanzee’s
The conversation it is real.

Jane Goodall has been moved
For certain
By their phraseology
What is their command of language
Spirit and vivacity
Acting up with
so much drama
They are really light and day
Touch and twiddle
Their precision
they look at you
In that age old way

And you know you got through

It’s in their eyes
