Goanna(iguana)

Carnivorous reptiles
Frequent the red earth
Making their great holes
For all of their worth
Gathering food
Laying their eggs
And digging their burrowsWith their
Scales legs

The Perentie gigantic
More than two metres long
They can be a real handful
And it can all go wrong
These totemic spirited souls of the earth
Have lived in the red
They have died and given birth
To the Dreamtime and stories
Of culture and life
The fables the tables
The instruction to strife
In morpheme wherever the narrative went
The Goanna discovered
That it might have meant

It’s place in the Kimberley
Long long ago
In the rock art along with the wanjinas flow
The celestial beings
Feathered they be
The gulaga serpents
Who seemingly
Still see respect
For the Goanna who
Still digs his holes
Which is what he does do
Still to this day eaten
Thrown on a fire
Varanus by name
Adding heat to the pyre
