“Martha”

An old German shepherd
From a construction site
Chained up during the day
And guarding at night
Through all the weather
The climate dared throw
And shot away sadly
By the wind and the snow

Clearly disabled
and suffering so
“Martha” was ailing
but no one would show
Up and help her
no finances towards a vet
And so she was left there
to whimper just set
Still in her constancy
Suffering so
Clearly heart breaking
With no where to go

When your old and your weary
And your legs they pain so
Just any movement
and tears start to flow
No pain medication
no food anywhere
Just any movement
brings on pure despair
And a general heartlessness
makes it all feel
Nobody loves you that much is real
All alone all the day
no one to see
How much you are suffering
And why must it be

Sharing compassion
can help a lot
But just on ones own
what have you got
Just the pain talking
to yourself muttering you
Want just to sleep
and not wake up you do
I know how she feels
it’s a terrible feeling
And it’s relentless
and very revealing

We found her and took her
And the vet thought that she
Needed x Rays
and love if she was to be
Helped her sweet face is marked with the pain
But her eyes still see hope
From her brilliant refrain

She has had the surgery
And what she needs is a set of wheels
It’s those kinds of deeds
That help an old soul
A watcher let’s say
Who took on her stints at the end of each day
And time and age turned her
To a disabled soul
Who still had a heart
And of course a great soul.

Straw PAWS.
