Edward

We found “Edward”
On a rubbish tip
By a barbed wire fence
Bathing in pure hopelessness
He could’t make no sense
Of life out
On the roadside
The Dust dirt and despair
His hopes had been extinguished
He was hopelessly aware
That nobody now cared for him
He was all alone
He just laid down in all the trash
He let his last groan
Head down he was fly bait
Until we came along
And offered him a biscuit
MY god something was wrong

He was startled he was nervous
He was frightened that’s for sure
He tried to run off up the road
But was clearly very sore
We tossed a blanket on his back
And took him to the van
One of our angels brought him in
Which had always been the plan

He was skin and bone and agony
His misgivings and mistrust
Built up over months of pain
And what felt like disgust
His face all tears and dried blood
Mange was everywhere
Not an inch of soft fur left
And nobody to care

His ribs were all protruding
A pockmarked body be
Was clearly so uncomfortable
Anyone could see
The lesions and the scratches
The parasitic scars
We used our medicated creams
We did use a few jars
Washed him creamed him
Loved him cuddled him a lot
A few weeks of this treatment
And he knew that he had got
His life back all that shock and awe
That utter misery
regular meals and fresh water
He just felt so free
Playful with his comrades
Playmates
all around
The girls they all just loved him
And he covered the ground
Running this way that way
He had been close to death
And now was more like Peter Pan
Sharing his sweet breath
