Rudston Monolith

The devil supposed to have
Just left it there
A 40 ton gritstone
From Clayton aware
Somehow it got to
Rudston and we think
Glacial erratic
Yes Possibly
A Norman church erected after
The standing stone
Biggest around
No where in Britain
Can you find one larger
And a dinosaur print
On the face has been found

an old wives tale perhaps
But clearly we see
The tallest of monoliths
Bigger by far And it is standing free
Inside this old churchyard
Early Bronze Age
With skulls at its base
So Stukely did gauge
It must have been sacred
This land before
The church was erected
Of that he was sure
It’s a breath taking sight
At the break of the day
Standing Serene
In its quite sacred way
A cursus it could be
Chalk lines run straight
A Neolithic games site
So possibly great

Marking the point
Where the winners might stand
A ceremonial marker
There on the land
Mystics and druids
And pagans agree
It is first rate
Standing remarkably
Straight all these years
Throughout so much of time
The rain and the snow and the
Sun, Watch it climb
To shine on the surface
Despite what you hear
It does feel divine
Anytime of the year
