The initiation

The Barnacle Goose chick
Comes into this world
And thats when its troubles begin
Its parents to prevent predation
Have laid the eggs high
And to win

A life and a family
And food on the table
The poor little chick
Has to leap
Over the cliff and fall
400 feet
Hitting big jagged rocks
“Cheep cheep cheep”

They are the soft sounds of making
The gandering initiation
Just close your eyes and leap
Into their air
You are extra fluffy
So that wing and that prayer

Is all that you have
To herald your spring
To kick start your life
To be able to fling
Your cute little fluff bag
Out into the air
To set your ball rolling
I know its not fair

Take the plunge
Auspicate
in a nutshell ofcourse
You have no time
to wait

Your primordial leap
Is your massive debut
Launch your self
Lead the way
Its your time to do

And though you can’t fly
You will fall like a stone
Hitting the rocks
Like nothing you’ve known
You were made tiny
And fluffy as hell
And if you keep it together
You will manage it well

So each does its leap
And down it does fall
Till it eventually bounces
And then hears the call
Of its mother and father
Waiting below
Saying when you do stop
Follow us we will show

You where to eat
And thats what they do
Leap into the air
And hope it comes true
Some do not make it
Dropping out of the sky
They fall like lead weights
And sadly they die

Others get lost
They dont meet up below
Having such fearful parents
Life suffers we know

One or two manage
They struggle though they
Learn from the experience
And come what may
Are stronger for it
For faith has a way
Of rewarding the babies
On their given day

Watching them free fall
Is a frustrating thing
Watching them bash into rocks
It does bring
Out some trepidation
And a mother’s release
Life is topsy turvy
For these Barnacle geese

You have to feel sorry
At such a young age
To leap off a cliff
And just try to engage
It feels like insanity
If you ask me
But does seem to work
For the geese thankfully
