DJibouti to Hargeisa you take your life in your hands

The oldest and most dillapidated road trucks
Ply this route its difficult and hard
Loaded up with all sorts its so dangerous
On unmade roads you have to be on guard
Every moment of the long long journey
There are no roads to speak just awful tracks
Lacking any substance and these are just the facts
Mines everywhere and quick sand sharp stones to
Tears one’s tyres
Everything about the place is terrible
And every journey comes with its surprise

Somaliland is independent from Somalia
Its a republic the border there is one
The visa office opens just three hours and to be sure
You have to pay your taxes those you can’t ignore
It costs around 1200 Somaliland dollars
Counting that is difficult to do
Its weighed out thats the bank notes
Some ten kilograms
Money is almost worthless which is true

We are following a trucker whose called Rashid
Who does this journey at least two times per week
He carries two passengers and his own mechanic
And check his truck to ensure its at its peak
Breaking down in the desert can be costly
Getting a tow to the village of the damned
Thats a place that once was into farming
But its now a holding post and it is crammed
Up with broken trucks awaiting parts to come
The farmers are now mechanics so everyone knows some
One who fixes something and a barn is the hotel
But really for the truckers its really called a hell

The trucks that do get through give messages
To operatives to tell them their trucks lost
Drivers get exhausted from the driving and the fear
And keep themselves awake with “khat” a drug or so I hear.
A green leaf that soon gets to you a stimulant effect
It makes your eyes so bloodshot so its easy to detect
The round trip earns 135 dollars so good money if you have the balls
All the way to Hargeisa to drop the load
And find another to come back with another on the same road.
