Costco and it’s battery egg promises

A corporate as massive as Costco ought to be
Trading on its promises and nobody should see
A producer doing the opposite and ethics in the frame
Hillandale somehow does fail that’s what some do claim

Nearby eggs is a message and the picture it displays
Is chickens roaming in green pastures which well kind of says
Freedom they have freedom and confinement is not the thing
But reality tells us a different story so today I bring

Some truth into the equation cage free they are not
In fact the cages are real small in hell they have got
The worst kind of conditions locked in cages right
Living on each other in artificial light

Not a hint of sunshine and certainly no fresh air
Clearly no inspection for the dead birds that are there
Are left to rot and mummify and on those pancakes they
Lay their eggs and live in fact every single day

What can be more hellish than living on corpses we
Can not even imagine the nightmare these birds see
Eating sleeping shitting and laying eggs as well
On top of all this vileness this is indeed true Hell

the hens their wings get broken the pain of that please try
Their necks get caught in the wire alas and sadly then they die
Nobody comes to release them so they mummify and rot
This is battery cage production right there on the spot

And Costco has said they are phasing out cages
And 10 years has passed since they have said this
A lot of real sad tears
Have fallen from the many eyes
All females in distress
And still they chickens are in cage living in this mess

And no timeline and no transition
It just goes on and on
To me and others actually it feels like quite a con
Whilst the packaging is clear it shows
A meadow nice and green
Where happy chickens pass their days
But instead it’s quite obscene

For me there is some abhorrence
It’s disgusting that these birds
Are given such a horrid life
But the marketing words

Are apparently dishonest
For this is real abuse
I haven’t got the stomach
To understand this ruse

The chickens are supplying the eggs
For us to eat
And coming from such squalor
And impurity to greet

Consumers who are believing
Another story here
It’s lamentable behaviour
Creating quite some fear

On less space than one iPad
These poor birds live their life
Food safety must be in the reckoning
Along with all this strife

Salmonella must be around
In what is the standard fair
Crushed and dying chickens
Are really everywhere

Yoke trails clearly running
Fly infested too
Who would ever buy these eggs
Knowing this is true

It’s really quite beyond the pale
To make chickens suffer so
And to lie about it to customers
Who think of course they know

Suffering is costly
The discomfort of it all
Such melancholy and sadness
They can just about crawl

They cannot glad their wings though
And their poor feet how they bleed
The anxiety of living
And of trying to succeed

It’s galling and it’s mortifying
To see great banks of birds
In cages tightly packed
Really I am lost for words

The smell is unbelievable
Ammonia fills the air
The nostrils seek fulfilment
From breathing some fresh air

Have some remorse for those sweet birds
Who clearly must desire
A field in which to wander in
So show to light their fire

To retrace their instinctive pleasure
To remember how it was
And to be so disillusioned
Really just because

Life is so pathetic
So tear jerking so sick
The total insipidity
The truly gruesome slick

Of urine and of feathers
And everything else besides
The mutilated corpses
That now nobody hides

It’s spitefulness and viciousness
It’s rancour through and through
Humanities depravity
Just pitiless we do

Carry on rewarding the chickens
In this way
Every sort of atrocity
That could be brought in play

And no respect for their offering
The eggs that we all buy
Despite the misfeasance going on
Still we do apply

Ourselves to so support it
For we do believe it’s right
Things are a whole lot better
Suppliers have seen the light

They have pledged they are doing something
We believe that so
we go and buy them regularly
The boxes do they show

We ought to have the confidence
We expect to anyway
And it’s shocks us all to discover
That the chickens still all pay

There is no respect for life
Just desecration there
Neglectful and Unregarded
In unflattering despair

Thank goodness that I am vegan
For it gives me some esteem
I can honour every living soul
For there is nothing to redeem

My wish is that these corporations
Knuckle down and try
They have the bloody where for all
And the question we ask why

They cannot bring themselves to honour
Their public and to be
Honest and less abusive
To the animals to free

All of them from sanctions
From the prisons that they made
Give them back some dignity
And love
